What to see and do in Bargas

Bargas
Village
Bargas is a municipality in the comarca of La Sagra, in the province of Toledo, with 11,274 inhabitants (INE 2025), which has grown notably since the early 21st century due to the expansion of the metropolitan areas of Toledo and Madrid; it is crossed from northeast to southwest by the Guadarrama river. It was one of the twenty-six hamlets in the district of Toledo with which Alfonso VI began repopulating the area in 1085, occupied by the nobleman Pedro Ibáñez de Vargas, the origin of the Vargas lineage that renamed the village, previously called Val de Olivas. Its municipal area holds more than thirty-eight archaeological sites, from the Iron Age to the late Middle Ages, preserves the hermitage of the Santísimo Cristo de la Sala, built of brick and rammed earth, and is known for its hand-made almond marquesitas.
Church of San Esteban Protomártir de Bargas
Monument
The church of San Esteban Protomártir stands in the very center of the historic quarter of Bargas, being the main architectural monument of the town. The building reflects three centuries of history in its construction: it shows the features of the religious architecture directed by Toledan master builders in the service of the Archbishopric during the 16th and 17th centuries, although it retains a brick tower from the late 15th or early 16th century, with small windows of Mudejar reminiscence, and a pilastered bell tower already from the 16th century, all within the classicist canons of Toledan tradition.
Hermitage of el Santísimo Cristo de la Sala
Monument
The hermitage of the Santísimo Cristo de la Sala, in Bargas (La Sagra, Toledo), is built of brick with rammed-earth (tapial) infill and a doorway beneath a small roof over a wooden cornice, topped by a single-bell gable with a semicircular arch. It has a single nave with a chancel and a side room for the internal use of the Hermandad del Santísimo Cristo de la Sala, which in the 19th century replaced the old Cofradía de la Vera Cruz. It houses the image of the Christ, long venerated in the region, which remains in the hermitage all year except in September, when it is moved to the church of San Esteban Protomártir for its feast.
Loranque Estate
Monument
A farmhouse located on the outskirts of the town of Bargas, dating from the late 18th century and rebuilt in the early 20th with brick and rammed-earth (tapial) walls and an Arabic tile roof. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) for its natural features, its historical and cultural origins, the preservation of its landscaped grounds and its traditional architecture. Today it operates as a winery protected under the Denominación de Origen Méntrida.
La Función de Bargas
Activity
A celebration in honor of the Santísimo Cristo de la Sala, known to the residents of Bargas, in the Toledo region of La Sagra, as La Función. It is held on the third Sunday of September, and its central event is the procession of the image through the streets of the town, in which a large number of local women take part dressed in the traditional local costume. It was declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional (a regional festival of tourist interest) by order of 20 March 2003 of the Consejería de Industria y Trabajo.
Pedro Ibáñez de Vargas, founder of Bargas
Curiosity
Tradition attributes the founding of Bargas to Pedro Ibáñez de Vargas, a knight of the Casa de Vargas who in the 11th century accompanied King Alfonso VI in the conquest of Toledo in 1085, where he was well rewarded with land. A short distance from the city he founded a place that took his name, Bargas, which became the original seat of the Vargas lineage of Toledo. He was the son of Iván de Vargas and father of Fernán Pérez de Vargas, who succeeded him at the head of the family estate (mayorazgo).
The archaeological sites of Bargas
Curiosity
The municipal district has more than thirty-eight identified archaeological sites, from the Iron Age to the Late Middle Ages, with Roman, Visigothic and medieval remains.
From Val de Olivas to Bargas
Historical milestone
The hamlet was first called Val de Olivas and later took the surname of the Vargas lineage that resettled it. The form Bargas, with a b, took hold at the end of the eighteenth century, when the place had already consolidated as a municipality of its own.
The marquesitas of Alguacil
Food and drink
Sweets of almond and sugar whose recipe was patented a century ago by Pablo Alguacil and which are still made by hand in the town. They are the product that identifies Bargas outside the comarca and they are not made industrially.
Pickled sea bream
Food and drink
Fish cured in vinegar, oil and spices that arrived salted from the north and was preserved this way so that it could be sold at the inland fairs. It remains the benchmark tapa at the Bargas festivities and in the taverns of the centre.
