What to see and do in Mocejón

Mocejón
Village
Mocejón is a municipality in the comarca of La Sagra, in the province of Toledo, with 5,188 inhabitants, on a plain by the flood plain of the Tagus; its name derives from the personal name Mustonius, taken from a funerary tombstone found in the town. Long settled at El Palomar de Velilla, the settlement moved to its current, higher, site after the Muslim invasion; conquered by Alfonso VI, in the 12th century it changed hands between Pedro Rodríguez de Azagra and the Order of Calatrava. Queen Regent María Cristina granted it the title of town in 1889. Its main monument is the basilica church of San Esteban Protomártir, begun in the 16th century by Diego Hernando de Orduña and supported by granite columns about five metres high; it preserves the hermitage of the Vera Cruz and the tower of the castle of Higares.
