What to see and do in Olías del Rey

Olías del Rey
Village
Olías del Rey is a municipality in the comarca of La Sagra, in the province of Toledo, with 9,174 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name joins 'Olías', which may derive from the Arabic uliyya, 'height', or from the Latin oliva, for its olive cultivation, with 'Rey' ('king'), added when Philip V granted it the title of town in 1744; before that it was called Olías la Mayor. A mosque is attested in the Arab settlement from 1169, part of which is still preserved in the rear façade of the church of San Pedro Apóstol. Its residents received a charter of privileges from Henry IV in 1458; it preserves the church of San Pedro Apóstol, begun in the 14th century with Mudejar and Neoclassical elements, the palace of the Dukes of Fernandina, today the town hall, and the hermitage of Santa Bárbara, from the 18th century, declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).

The charter of Enrique IV
Curiosity
On 18 January 1458 King Enrique IV granted the residents of Olías the franquicia (exemption), freeing them from having to give anything against their will; an exemption that, combined with its position on the royal road to Toledo and the abundance of water in the area, made Olías an important stopping place. In 1744 Felipe V granted the town the title of villa, after which it came to be called Olías del Rey in recognition of its loyalty during the wars, and its municipal coat of arms bears the monarch's initials F V.
