What to see and do in Manzaneque

Manzaneque
Village
Manzaneque is a municipality of the Montes de Toledo, about 40 km from the capital, on a plain at the foot of the sierras of los Yébenes and la Rabera, at 715 m altitude, watered by the Riansares stream. Its place name is linked to the old apple orchards that once existed in its territory, now vanished. Probably already in existence in Visigothic times, in the 14th century María Catalina de Orozco had the castle built, on the site of an earlier watchtower that guarded the road out of Toledo towards Andalusia, in order to secure Manzaneque as an entity exempt from the lordship of Orgaz. In 1879 the Madrid-Ciudad Real railway line opened, with its own station, in service until 1988. The exodus of the 1950s and 1960s reduced its population, which today stands at 407 inhabitants.

Curiosity
The place name Manzaneque, in the Montes de Toledo, is related to the word manzana (apple in Spanish) and points to the abundance of apple trees that must once have grown there, now vanished. The name has changed over the centuries: in the 13th century the place was recorded as Manzanech, and by the 16th century it already appears written as Mançaneque, a form closer to the current one.
