What to see and do in Tembleque

Tembleque
Village
Tembleque is a municipality in the comarca of La Mancha de Toledo, in the province of Toledo, with 1,992 inhabitants (INE 2025), next to the A-4 motorway linking Madrid with Andalusia, 92 kilometres from the capital of Spain. It received a founding charter from the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem in 1241 and the title of town in 1509; the sale of wool and transhumance then brought it a flourishing period, cut short by a severe flood in 1801 and by the looting and burning of 92 houses during the Peninsular War. Its 17th-century Plaza Mayor, with arcades of granite columns and two-storey wooden galleries, incorporates the 1654 town hall, and the ensemble is completed by the Casa de las Torres, an 18th-century Baroque palace, and the octagonal hermitage of the Veracruz.
Main Square of Tembleque
Monument
A 17th-century Manchegan square with arcades on granite columns and wooden galleries on two levels, considered one of the most beautiful in Spain.
Town Hall of Tembleque
Monument
Town hall dated to 1654 and part of the Plaza Mayor ensemble, of which it forms one of the most recognisable frontages. Its main entrance is covered by an overhang crowned with a four-sided lookout, on an arcaded square with granite columns and wooden galleries on the upper floor.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Tembleque
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is the main place of worship in Tembleque (La Mancha de Toledo), transitional between Gothic and Renaissance style. It was built in large part in the first half of the 16th century thanks to donations from Cardinal Cisneros, grateful for the town's help in the 1509 expedition to Oran, joined by contributions from the priors of San Juan and from local residents; the 1582-1596 renovations were directed by Nicolás Vergara el Mozo. It has a Latin-cross floor plan, a single nave and a polygonal chancel, with Gothic pillars and Renaissance columns supporting ribbed vaults. Gothic chapels and others from the 18th century open between the buttresses. Its tower stands out, with three tiers and a spire of slate and lead. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2012.
House of the Towers
Monument
Palace-house also known as the palacio de los Fernández Alejo, built in the 18th century in Baroque style by Antonio Fernández Alejo and declared a Monumento Histórico Artístico (a former Spanish heritage designation, predecessor of today's Bien de Interés Cultural) in 1979; it is the most notable civil building in Tembleque (La Mancha de Toledo). It has a square floor plan with a central courtyard, Tuscan stone columns and a double gallery, a semi-basement, three storeys and two spired turrets at the corners of the main façade, which bears a coat of arms flanked by two caravels alluding to its indiano character. Owing to its state of decay it was included in the 2000s on the Lista Roja del Patrimonio en Peligro (Red List of Endangered Heritage), though in 2021 its restoration was announced as a guesthouse for visitors and pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago de Levante, which passes through Tembleque.
Hermitage of la Veracruz de Tembleque
Monument
The Ermita de la Veracruz in Tembleque, in the La Mancha de Toledo district, is a building of atypical, singular design: with a centralised floor plan resolved as an octagon crowned by a dome, an uncommon formula in the religious architecture of La Mancha. Its extreme sobriety and architectural purity date it to the second half of the 18th century. Its design draws on precedents such as the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and 12th-century Romanesque examples such as the churches of Eunate (Pamplona) and the Vera Cruz in Segovia. For many years it held the burial of a member of the illustrious Torres family. Restored by the Escuela Taller Tembleque III, it today houses the municipal library and archive.
From Trenblec to Tembleque
Curiosity
The place name appears as Trenblec in 1228 and as Tembleque in 1517. It is thought to come from the Latin tremulare, to tremble, in reference to marshy ground.
The 1241 founding charter
Curiosity
The prior of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem granted the town its settlement charter in 1241, and in 1509 Queen Juana granted it the title of villa. Its prosperity was tied to the wool trade and to transhumance.
Tembleque in Noah Gordon's novel
Curiosity
The town appears as a setting in El último judío, a novel published by American writer Noah Gordon in 1999. Tembleque is one of the places where the plot unfolds, since one of the antagonists, Count Ferrán Vasca, lives in its castle.
