What to see and do in Turleque

Turleque
Village
Turleque is a municipality of La Mancha de Toledo, with 702 inhabitants (INE 2025), whose name blends the Latin turris (tower) with a Mozarabic diminutive, and would mean little tower. It was originally an agricultural settlement of Consuegra, whose residents worked from the hamlet of Los Turlequejos until they moved, owing to the unhealthiness of the place, to the present-day centre around a small church. Frey Guillén de Mondragón, commander of Consuegra, granted a founding charter in 1248, based on the Fuero de Consuegra, and distributed the land in shares among the settlers. Turleque became an independent town in 1751. It preserves the church of la Asunción, attributed to the architect Juan de Villanueva, the Casa Tercia and the jurisdictional pillory, and nearby is the Finisterre reservoir, on the río Algodor.
Church of la Asunción de Turleque
Monument
Parish church of Turleque, in the province of Toledo, located on the plaza del Generalísimo and considered the village's main monument. Built in neoclassical style from 1778 onwards to replace the old church, demolished because of its ruinous state, the work was paid for by the Infante Gabriel de Bourbon, grand prior of the Order of Saint John, and its design is attributed to the architect Juan de Villanueva. It has a single nave without an apse, covered with a barrel vault and divided into six bays by semicircular arches and Doric pilasters, with shallow side chapels and a choir at the foot of the church. On the outside, the ashlar façade is topped by a pediment flanked by two brick towers. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), with the rank of monument, on 1 February 1994.
Tercia House of Turleque
Monument
Former tax-collection house of Turleque, one of the historic civic buildings preserved by the municipality. It has now been refurbished and serves as the local medical practice.
Pillar of Turleque
Monument
A jurisdictional column recalling the municipal independence the town obtained in the 18th century.
Reservoir of Finisterre
Nature
The Finisterre reservoir, completed in 1983, lies 5 kilometres from Villanueva de Bogas, between the municipalities of Mora, Villanueva de Bogas, Tembleque and Turleque, on the course of the Algodor river. It has significant ecological value, being home to numerous species of waterfowl that settle and breed there, as well as other threatened species typical of the Mediterranean habitat, such as large birds of prey that find peace and food there, which is why it was declared a Refugio de Fauna (a regional wildlife-protection designation) under Decree 58/2020 of 22 September. Its waters are also used for fishing, with species such as carp, black bass and pumpkinseed sunfish.
The little tower of Turleque
Curiosity
The place name combines the Latin turris, tower, with the Mozarabic diminutive particle -leque, that is, little tower. The village received its settlement charter in 1248 under the Order of Saint John, and Fernando VI made it an independent villa in 1751.
