What to see and do in Alhama de Aragón

Alhama de Aragón
Village
Alhama de Aragón is a spa town in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, in the province of Zaragoza, with 917 inhabitants and a tradition of thermal bathing since Roman times. It lies at 664 metres, in a pass where the Jalón river exploits a line of fractures from which thermal waters flow. Its Roman name, Aquae Bilbilitanorum, attests to ancient thermal use; the current name comes from the Arabic Al-Hammam, "the baths", with the Baño del Moro and the Baño de la Mora, pools carved into the rock. El Cid included it among his conquests in 1081, according to the Cantar de Mío Cid, though it returned to Muslim hands until its reconquest by Alfonso I in 1122. Disputed between Castile and Aragon, it was incorporated into the Crown of Aragon in 1454; the exploitation of its thermal waters began in the 19th century.
Thermal Waters of Alhama and Jaraba
Curiosity
In Alhama de Aragón there rises a thermal lake unique in Spain, of almost two hectares and with two islands, fed by waters that emerge at 34 degrees; the municipality also has eight springs of bicarbonated, calcic, nitrogenous, arsenical, hyperthermal and radioactive waters. The Roman place name Aquae Bilbilitanorum, recorded in the Antonine Itinerary, suggests that the hot springs were already known in Roman times, and in the 19th century the archaeologist Cea Bermúdez claimed to have seen remains of those installations. The Baño del Moro and the Baño de la Mora are still preserved, two basins carved into the rock from which the thermal water flows directly; Madoz's Dictionary, in 1845, already spoke of 30 or 40 mineral springs in the town.
