What to see and do in Ibdes

Ibdes
Village
Ibdes is a municipality in the comarca of the Comunidad de Calatayud, in the province of Zaragoza, with 351 inhabitants and situated at an altitude of 743 metres, close to the Monasterio de Piedra and within the tourist triangle it forms with the spa towns of Alhama de Aragón and Jaraba. Alfonso I of Aragon (the Battler) reconquered it in 1120; in 1150 it passed to the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, which around 1170 built the church-convent of San Juan Bautista, confirmed by a bull of Pope Lucius II in 1182. The church of San Miguel Arcángel, the result of the transformation of the castle between 1517 and 1526, was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1974. On its territory opens the gruta de las Maravillas, with stalactites and stalagmites about 50,000 years old, and the La Paradera waterfall.
Church of Ibdes
Monument
The parish church of Ibdes (Community of Calatayud, Zaragoza), dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, was built between 1517 and 1526 near the Monasterio de Piedra. It is Gothic in style, with three naves separated by robust pillars and ribbed vaults, and a Renaissance portal. Its main altarpiece, of cathedral type, was commissioned in 1555 and was painted and gilded by Pietro Morone and Juan Catalán in 1558, with figures of Saint Bernard and Saint Benedict from the Monasterio de Piedra. It also preserves an organ case from 1732, the work of Bartolomé Sánchez, a Gothic baptismal font from 1539 and carved wooden pulpits from the 17th century.
