Bubierca
Village
Bubierca is a municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, in the province of Zaragoza, situated on the bank of the Jalón river, at 647 metres in altitude, with 66 inhabitants. It already existed in Roman times, when it is mentioned in Martial's Epigrams, and it is likely that beneath the Jalón's sediments the course of a Roman road still lies undiscovered. During the Reconquest it was a passage for El Cid Campeador, recalled in the Cantar de Mio Cid with the line "Pasó por Bubierca y por Ateca"; it was reconquered from the Muslims by Alfonso I in 1122. In 1808, during the Peninsular War, the battle of Bubierca was fought within its municipal boundary. It preserves the church of San Miguel Arcángel and the chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza.
