Carenas
Village
Carenas is a small municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, in Zaragoza, with 169 inhabitants (INE 2025), in the valley of the Piedra river, on the slope of a hillock surrounded by gentle hills, next to the Tranquera reservoir, built between 1952 and 1969, whose dam shares its head with Nuévalos. Documented since 1128, it developed under the Cistercian monks of the Piedra monastery, who promoted vineyards, and received the title of town from Ferdinand the Catholic in 1508. It preserves the Baroque chapel of Santa Ana and remains of Somet castle. The climate is Mediterranean-continental, with winters that have reached -12°C and summers of up to 40°C; the strongest flood, that of 20 May 1971, was caused by the reservoir overflowing.
