Contamina
Village
Contamina is a small municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, on the upper course of the Jalón river, with 34 inhabitants, sheltered to the northeast by the sierra de Cetina. Situated along the route of the old Camino Real, in the Middle Ages it was the site of stables for the horses of the royal postal service. The first document in which its name appears dates from 1206; in 1257 the bishop of Tarazona granted indulgences to those who attended the church of San Bartolomé on its feast day, and in 1313 the construction of a new church under the same dedication was commissioned. In 1361 King Peter IV granted the estate of Contamina to Pedro Carrillo, and the place was raised to a county in 1646. It today preserves the church of San Bartolomé, from the 16th century, with a Renaissance altarpiece, and the peirón of San Isidro.
