What to see and do in Ateca

Ateca
Village
Ateca is a municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, in the province of Zaragoza, with 1,785 inhabitants (INE 2025), at 603 metres in altitude, on the banks of the Jalón river, at its confluence with the Manubles river. Its name comes from the Arabic Atiqa, "ancient". By around 250 BC it was already a stable population centre, a crossing point between the Ebro valley and the meseta, next to the Roman road linking Augusta Emerita and Cesaraugusta. It was a Celtiberian city, the centre of the territory of the Belli. The Mudéjar tower of the church of Santa María de Ateca, with an Almohad minaret structure, may date from the late 11th or the 13th century; the ensemble was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). In 1862 the Chocolates Hueso factory was founded in the town, which distributed the Huesitos chocolate bars nationwide.
