What to see and do in Beceite

Beceite
Village
Beceite is a medieval villa in the Matarraña comarca, with 572 inhabitants (INE 2025), at the foot of the Puertos de Beceite, the most prominent mountain range in the northeast of the province of Teruel, where the Matarraña, Ulldemó, Algás and Pena rivers rise. Its old town preserves five of the gates of the former walled perimeter, among them the Portal de Villanueva, and the Casa de la Vila, with a 15th-century Gothic exchange hall. The church of San Bartolomé, with a Baroque doorway with Solomonic columns, incorporates a 12th-century chapel from an earlier Templar church, and the bridge over the Matarraña was also a 12th-century Templar work. Completing the ensemble are the ermita of Santa Ana, the Palau del Arzobispo and defensive towers, among them the Fuerte de Cabrera, prominent in the Carlist Wars.

Ports de Beceite
Nature
The Puertos de Beceite, also called the puertos de Tortosa-Beceite, are a mountain massif straddling the provinces of Tarragona, Teruel and Castellón, at the meeting point between the Catalan Pre-Coastal range and the Iberian System, of great scenic value. Its ravines and limestone outcrops, typical of karst relief, are home to pine forests, oak woods, holm oak woods and a beech forest declared a partial nature reserve. It shelters the largest colony of Iberian ibex on the peninsula, as well as badgers, genets, otters and birds of prey such as the griffon vulture and the golden eagle. Its highest peak is monte Caro, at 1,441 metres, the highest point in the province of Tarragona.

Paper and playing-card factories
Historical milestone
Between the 18th and 20th centuries the waters of the Matarraña, in Beceite, powered as many as six paper mills that produced quality paper, cardboard and playing cards; from here came the paper that supplied the Heraclio Fournier company. The closure of the last factories in the early 1970s emptied the town.
Almond from the dryland slopes
Food and drink
Alongside the olive grove, the almond is the traditional crop of the slopes of the district, on the edge of the Puertos. The almond is used in home-made turrones and guirlaches and in the crushed pastes that thicken the lamb and game stews proper to mountain cooking.
