What to see and do in Fuentespalda

Fuentespalda
Village
Fuentespalda is a municipality of Teruel in the Matarraña comarca, at 712 metres above sea level, with 305 inhabitants, located in the interfluve of the Pena and Tastavins rivers. In the Figuerals valley Levantine rock paintings are preserved, and the Vila Vella is one of the few known Roman settlements in this part of the Matarraña, dating from the 1st to 3rd centuries. In 1175 the hamlet was given in fief to the Bishop of Zaragoza, and received a charter of settlement in 1232 for colonists from northern Lérida; in 1295 it obtained the privilege of having its own jurors and justice. It preserves the Gothic church of El Salvador, with a Baroque organ from around 1680, and the defensive tower of La Torreta, from the 15th century. The surrounding pine forest, in the Ports de Tortosa-Beceite, is home to Spanish ibex.
Church of Fuentespalda
Monument
The church of El Salvador de Fuentespalda stands at one end of the plaza de España, in the Matarraña district. Built in Gothic style in the 14th century, like other parishes in the district erected under the patronage of the archbishops of Zaragoza, it preserves from that period the apse and the first bay of the nave, with two chapels covered by ribbed vaults. In the 17th century it underwent an extensive Baroque remodelling: a doorway was opened in the old apse, a large bell-gable was raised, and a new bay and presbytery were added with Baroque-Neoclassical vaults, along with a raised choir. In this choir is preserved an organ built around 1680, enlarged in 1704 by Francisco Turull, with lavishly decorated Baroque wooden furnishings; restored in 1993, it remains in use.

Nature
Natural area known as the Puertos de Beceite or Puertos de Tortosa-Beceite, a mountain massif that extends between the provinces of Tarragona, Teruel and Castellón, shared by the municipalities of Beceite, Fuentespalda and Valderrobres. Formed of Mesozoic limestone materials, it has a steep karst relief with ravines, potholes and caves; its highest point, Monte Caro, reaches 1,441 metres. It is home to pine forests, oak woods, holm oak groves and a beech wood declared a partial nature reserve, as well as the largest colony of Iberian ibex on the peninsula, deer, roe deer, wild boar, mouflon and around twenty species of bats. The Catalan part has been protected as the Ports Natural Park since 2001.

Food and drink
