What to see and do in Valderrobres

Valderrobres
Village
Valderrobres, in Catalan Vall de Roures, is the administrative capital of Matarraña, in Teruel, crossed by the river that gives the comarca its name. It has 2,555 inhabitants (INE 2025) and sits on a hill surrounded by mountains and pine forests. The landscape is dominated by the Peña Aznar, or La Caixa, 1,014 metres high and table-shaped, which already appears in 1170, after the reconquest of the valley by Alfonso II of Aragon, in the donation document to the archbishopric of Zaragoza. The municipal district preserves Iberian sites, including Torre Gachero, with funerary stelae from the 1st-2nd centuries BC now in the museum of Teruel. Between October and December 1429 it hosted sessions of the Cortes of Aragon presided over by Alfonso V. It belongs to the Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España association and preserves its Gothic castle-palace above the river.
Castle-Palace of Valderrobres
Monument
Castle-palace of Valderrobres, in the Matarraña, considered one of the great jewels of Aragonese Gothic, with panoramic views over the old town and the Puertos de Beceite. It originated as a defensive tower from the late 12th century, which the archbishops of Zaragoza García Fernández de Heredia and Dalmacio de Mur y Cervellón transformed between the 14th and 15th centuries into an episcopal palace, more stately than military, built around a natural rock still visible on its second floor. It preserves rooms such as the Hall of the Cortes, the Hall of the Lions and the Golden Chamber, around a central courtyard. Declared a Monumento Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection before the creation of the Bien de Interés Cultural) in 1931, it was restored in the 1980s and again until its completion in 2021, and today hosts exhibitions, conferences and music.
The Aragonese Tuscany
Curiosity
Nickname by which the Matarraña region, in Teruel, is known for its landscapes of stone, olive groves and monumental villages, compared to the Italian countryside. The magazine Vogue described the region's nature and historical heritage as the Spanish Tuscany, in an article in its lifestyle section devoted to slow tourism in the area.
Festivities of Valderrobres
Activity
The patron saint festivities of Valderrobres are held from 14 to 19 August in honour of San Roque, with a chupinazo rocket, a solemn mass in the Gothic church of Santa María la Mayor, dawn bull runs, livestock displays and open-air dances.

Activity

Lordship of the Aznar Lagaya crag
Historical milestone
The donation document of Alfonso II calls the territory the valley of the peña Aznar Lagaya. The archbishop of Zaragoza received it in fief and handed it to Fortún Roberto with a charter of settlement; after the suit with Jaime II it returned to episcopal jurisdiction until the nineteenth century.
