Castelserás
Village
Castelserás is a municipality of the Teruel Bajo Aragón, situated at 382 metres above sea level at the confluence of the Mezquín river with the Guadalope, with 800 inhabitants (INE 2020). Founded by the Iberian Sedetani around 1000 BC as Castrum Zeras, it received the name Leonica in Roman times and was one of the five cities in Iberia where Julius Caesar obtained supplies. After the Reconquest, it belonged to the Order of Calatrava from the 13th century until the mid-19th, forming a minor commandery together with Molinos and Alberite, attested by the Palace of the Commandery. In 1402 it merged with neighbouring Alcañiz and ceased to be an independent settlement. Its main festivities, on 19, 20 and 21 January, honour San Sebastián and San Antón with poplar-wood bonfires.
Church of Castelserás
Monument
Early-18th-century Baroque church of la Natividad de la Virgen in Castelserás, raised over an earlier, probably Gothic church; it suffered damage during the Carlist Wars and the Civil War.
Festivities of Castelserás
Activity
Patron saint festivities of Castelserás on 19, 20 and 21 January, in honour of San Sebastián and San Antón, with poplar-wood bonfires in the Plaza del Puente and the Plaza de España; the summer festivities, on the first weekend of August, honour Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.
Hermitage of Castelserás
Monument
The hermitage of la Virgen del Pilar de Castelserás was built in 1914 by the married couple Antonio Catalán Vallés and Pabla Azcón out of their own devotion, on a hill two kilometers from the town with views of Alcañiz, Torrecilla de Alcañiz and Calanda; it is a modest 12 m² chapel with an ashlar arch and the year 1914 carved on the keystone, restored in 1986 with ceramic panels by Juan José Vaquero Foz.
Pepper flatbreads
Food and drink
A thin bread dough covered with roast pepper and baked in the oven, sometimes enriched with tuna or with ham. It is made in the comarca's bakeries and eaten as a mid-morning meal or as an aperitif at the summer festivities.
