What to see and do in Teverga

Teverga
Village
Teverga is a municipality of Asturias, with its capital at La Plaza and around 1,500 inhabitants, situated between the provinces of León and Asturias. It was once a mining municipality and today bases its economy on agriculture and tourism, in mountainous terrain where the Peña Sobia stands out, with its vertical limestone walls. Its relief is organised into three deep valleys —Valdesampedro, Valdesantibanes and Valdecárzana—, each followed by a river of the same name, which join at Samartín to form the Teverga river. Its southern summits come close to 2,000 metres. In 2013 the municipality received the Premio al Pueblo Ejemplar de Asturias. Its collegiate church of San Pedro was built before 1096, and since 2007 it has been home to the Parque de la Prehistoria and one end of the Senda del Oso trail.
Collegiate church of San Pedro de Teverga
Monument
The collegiate church of San Pedro stands in La Plaza, a village in the Asturian concejo of Teverga, and is one of the earliest examples of Romanesque architecture in the region, built in the 11th century as a transition from the pre-Romanesque; the earliest documentation about it dates from 1096, and the collegiate church is believed to have been founded in 1107. It was originally a Benedictine monastery, donated by Countess doña Aldonza to the church of San Salvador in Oviedo. With a Latin-cross plan of three naves and a rectangular apse after a fire in the 17th century, it retains barrel vaults, round arches on cylindrical columns, a wide porch at the foot of the church and capitals carved with reliefs of animals of symbolic character. Beside the church, mummified remains found within the building itself are on display.
Cueva Huerta
Nature
Located in the gorge of the Foz de la Estrechura, near the AS-228 road between Páramo and Fresnedo, this cave system, formed by the Valdesampedro river, has 14.5 kilometres of surveyed galleries, making it the second-largest cave system in Asturias by extent, after the Red de Toneyu, at 19 kilometres. It is part of a singular karst complex bringing together a gorge, a sinkhole, a cave and several underground watercourses; its best-known stretches are the main gallery, the zero-point chamber, the old gallery -with the formations known as the cathedrals- and the San Martín gallery. It shelters protected colonies of cave bats. It was declared a Natural Monument on 29 August 2002 and can only be visited with a guide.
