What to see and do in Proaza

Proaza
Village
Proaza is a concejo of the Principality of Asturias watered by the Trubia river, which traces floodplains as it passes between ridges perpendicular to the Cantabrian mountain range; more than sixty percent of its land exceeds 400 metres in altitude, with peaks reaching up to 1,427 metres at the peña Sobia. It has 686 inhabitants and lives mainly off livestock farming. On the shaded slopes grow forests of oak and chestnut, and on the sunny ones holm oaks, alders, ash trees and fruit trees such as the apple tree, whose apple is valued for cider. The Senda del Oso runs through the concejo, laid out over a former mining railway, and it preserves the tower of Proaza, declared a monument in 1965. The earliest finds of human presence in the territory date back to the Paleolithic period.
Tower of Proaza
Monument
A cylindrical tower of rough ashlar with four floors, arrow slits and a raised entrance reached by a drawbridge, built to watch over the Trubia valley. Declared a monument in 1965, it is the most recognisable civil building in the municipality.
Bear Trail
Activity
The Senda del Oso, a nature trail and greenway, runs through the concejos of Proaza, Teverga, Quirós and Santo Adriano along the old bed of the mining railway that, until its closure in 1963, brought iron ore and coal down the valley of the river Trubia from Santa Marina and the mines of Teverga to the village of Trubia. The Principality of Asturias approved its restoration in 1991: the first stretch, between Tuñón and Proaza, opened in 1995, and the second, 18.5 kilometres long between Caranga and Cueva Huerta, in 1996, crossing the sierra de Caranga and the Peñas Juntas gorge. Altogether it totals about thirty-six kilometres of tunnels and gorges along the river Trubia. In Proaza is the enclosure where the she-bears Paca and Tola once lived.
