What to see and do in Belmonte de Miranda

Belmonte de Miranda
Village
Belmonte de Miranda is an Asturian concejo of around 1,370 inhabitants, with its capital at Belmonte, crossed from south to north by the Pigüeña river, a natural corridor between the Manteca mountain range, whose Horru peak reaches 1,527 metres, and La Bustariega. Its southeastern part forms part of the Somiedo natural park, and the territory's age-old isolation has allowed native forests of oak, bramble thicket and chestnut to survive. Three routes of communication have crossed it from north to south since time immemorial: the Camino Francés, a Roman road, and the course of the Pigüeña itself, where trout fishing is practised. Its history revolved around the monastery of Santa María de Lapedo, founded in 1032 and later Cistercian, and more than a dozen Roman gold workings remain in its mountains.
Gold mines of Boinás
Curiosity
The Romans worked one of the great gold deposits of the north-west here, and open workings and channels can still be made out at Boinás, Alvariza, Castañedo and La Brueba. The El Valle-Boinás lode was reopened in recent times.
The Battle of Lutos
Historical milestone
In 794 the emir's troops, returning laden with plunder after sacking Oviedo, were ambushed at the Paso de Lutos, in Belmonte de Miranda, by the men of Alfonso II; the Muslim defeat secured the young Asturian kingdom in its mountains.
