What to see and do in Somiedo

Somiedo
Village
Somiedo is a municipality of Asturias with just over a thousand inhabitants across 291 square kilometres, entirely designated a natural park and biosphere reserve, a refuge for the Cantabrian brown bear. Its relief, one of the most rugged in Asturias, rises in mountain ranges born of the Cantabrian Mountains, with peaks such as Cornón (2,194 m) and Peña Orniz (2,190 m), and is organised into the valleys of Somiedo, Pigüeña, Lago, Saliencia and Las Morteras; in the Quaternary, glaciers left high-mountain lakes and tarns here. Its rivers, today harnessed to produce electricity, give their names to these valleys and converge in the Pigüeña. In its upland pastures the teitos survive, stone huts thatched with broom, evidence of the municipality's old transhumant livestock economy.
Somiedo Natural Park
Nature
Somiedo Natural Park covers 29,122 hectares in the central area of the Cantabrian Mountains and coincides entirely with the concejo of Somiedo; it was declared a natural park in 1988 and a biosphere reserve by Unesco in 2000. It is the great refuge of the Cantabrian brown bear, home, according to studies, to between 40 and 50 percent of the entire population of the mountain range, alongside deer, wolves, chamois, roe deer, otters and wildcats. Its forests of beech, oak, yew and birch cover a quarter of the park, and its glacial valleys hold high-altitude lakes and brañas with teitos, cabins with a vegetation-covered roof traditionally used by the vaqueiros de alzada.
Lago del Valle
Nature
The largest lake in Asturias: twenty-four hectares at 1,580 metres above sea level, at the foot of a glacial cirque in the Valle del Lago. Its present size is due in part to the dam that fed the La Malva hydroelectric station.
