What to see and do in Quirós

Quirós
Village
Quirós is a mountainous Asturian concejo formed by two valleys, that of the Ricabo river and that of the Lindes, which join at Santa Marina to form the Quirós valley; its capital is Bárzana, formerly Pola de Bárzana, located in the centre of the concejo next to the old Camino Real. It has 1,142 inhabitants and is a very rugged territory: of its 208.80 km², 40% lies above 1,200 metres in altitude. It is enclosed by ranges such as Tene to the north, the Aramo to the east, the Ubiña massif to the south, bordering León, and Sobia to the west; among its limestone peaks stand out Peña Rueda, at 2,155 metres, and Fontán, at 2,417. The concejo lived off iron and coal for a century, and preserves the Romanesque church of San Pedro de Arrojo.
Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Natural Park
Nature
Declared in 2006 and a biosphere reserve since 2012, it spreads its 35,793 hectares across Quirós, Teverga and Lena around the Ubiña massif, whose main summit, the Peña Ubiña, reaches 2,417 metres. The park combines several protection designations, including the regional hunting reserve of Somiedo and the sites of community importance of Peña Ubiña and Montovo-La Mesa. It is an area of great archaeological value, with rock shelters near Fresnedo, hillforts such as those of Focella, Barrio, Ricabo and El Collao, remains of the Roman road of La Carisa and Visigothic fortifications at the Homón de Faro, as well as the Camino Real del Puerto de la Mesa, a Roman road. A third of its area is covered by forests of high ecological value, mainly beech woods.
Yew tree of Bermiego
Nature
The yew of Bermiego, or Teixu l'Iglesia, is a thousand-year-old tree of the species Taxus baccata that grows within the grounds of the church of Santa María, in the village of Bermiego, on the western slope of the sierra del Aramo, within the concejo of Quirós. Although its exact age is unknown for lack of studies, it is believed it may be a thousand years old. It has a crown 15 metres across, is ten metres tall and has a trunk with a girth of between 6.5 and 7 metres. It was declared a natural monument on 27 April 1995 and is protected under the Asturian natural resources plan; because of the sensitivity of its roots to soil compaction, the perimeter of the crown has been fenced off to prevent visitors from trampling it.
