What to see and do in Yernes y Tameza

Yernes y Tameza
Village
Yernes y Tameza is the least populous municipality in Asturias, with 134 inhabitants, its capital at Villabre, nestled among the mountains at the head of the Cubia river. It is organised into two parishes and five settlements: Villabre, Fojó and Villaruiz, in the parish of Villabre, and Yernes and Vendillés, in that of Yernes. Its relief, dominated by altitude and steep slopes, combines the rounded shapes of the siliceous rocks of the Sierra de Granda, to the north, with the karstic landscapes of the south, where large peaks such as the 1,357-metre Caldoveiro alternate with potholes and caves such as Cuevallagar. In 2013 a proposal was put to the Junta General del Principado to include the municipality in the Ubiñas natural park. More than 70% of its residents are over 55 years old.
Caldoveiro Peak
Nature
A summit of 1,357 metres that Yernes y Tameza shares with Teverga, Proaza and Grado, in an inland range of 11,359 hectares that is easy to climb from the village of Villabre, included within the Peña Ubiña, La Mesa natural park, which also takes in the natural monument of the Marabio passes. Four zones can be distinguished within it: the Marabio passes, in the centre; the basins of the Xordón river and the Cavadura stream, in Grado; the basin of the Tameza river; and the valley of the Trubia and Teverga rivers, the largest of all. The concejo is made up of limestone accumulations with abundant potholes and karst depressions. An arboretum dedicated to Ricardo Acebal del Cueto was planted on its heights, and the Marabio passes hold the protective, still undeveloped, status of Protected Natural Landscape.
Marabio Pass
Nature
The Marabio pass is a broad mountain pass with large meadows and a hydrogeological network of great value, with dolines and blind valleys, extending between the concejos of Yernes y Tameza, Teverga and Proaza. Its 1,225 hectares were declared a natural monument by Decree 41/2002, of 19 April, and the area is also included in the Las Ubiñas-La Mesa nature park and in the Caldoveiro and Ubiña-La Mesa special areas of conservation. The Enlightenment figure Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, who climbed up to it from Entrago, recorded in his Diario, in 1792, its great karst craters, the huts for livestock and the shared facería pastures used by the people of Yernes y Tameza.
