What to see and do in Riosa

Riosa
Village
Riosa is a municipality in the central mountains of Asturias, the only parish within its boundaries, with its capital at La Vega, where the climb to the top of the Angliru begins, the legendary mountain pass of the Vuelta a España. It has 1,686 inhabitants and lies beneath the Sierra del Aramo, which closes it off to the west with peaks such as Barriscal and Xistras, while to the east the ridge of Mount Llisoriu separates it from Mieres. The Llamo river, also called Riosa, flows through the municipality; it rises on the slopes of the Aramo and joins the Xuncar and the Grandiella near La Vega before flowing into the Caudal river. Copper was extracted at Texeo some 4,500 years ago, and almost two hundred human remains were found in those mining galleries.
Alto de L'Angliru
Activity
Twelve and a half kilometres of climbing from La Vega with 1,266 metres of ascent, an average of 10% and ramps that touch 24% at Cueña les Cabres. It made its debut in the 1999 Vuelta a España and has remained the most feared climb in Spanish cycling.
Mountain range of el Aramo
Nature
The sierra del Aramo, or simply the Aramo, is a limestone ridge of the Montaña Central Asturiana that extends about 15 kilometres from north to south, between the village of Peñerudes, in Morcín, and the Alto de la Cobertoria, separating the basins of the rivers Trubia and Caudal and spread across the concejos of Quirós, Morcín, Riosa and, to a lesser extent, Lena, Santo Adriano and Proaza. It rises more than fourteen hundred metres above the valleys and reaches its highest point at the Gamoniteiro peak, at 1,791 metres; on the Riosa side, the Xistras reaches 1,773 metres, and on its slopes the old copper mines of Texeo emerge. The PORNA declared it a Protected Landscape in 1994, although that designation was never developed with an official declaration or its own management instrument.
Prehistoric mines of Texeo
Monument
Copper and cobalt workings opened some 4,500 years ago on the eastern slope of the Aramo, between 1,200 and 1,600 metres; the engineer Van Stralen rediscovered them in 1888 along with 191 human remains of miners in the galleries.
