What to see and do in Cabrillanes

Cabrillanes
Village
Cabrillanes is a municipality in the province of León, in Castile and León, located in the comarca of Babia; its capital stands at 1,249 m, the highest altitude among the municipalities of the province, and includes La Cueta, the highest village in the province at 1,442 metres. It borders the Asturian council of Somiedo to the north, with which it is connected by the LE-495 road through the Somiedo pass, and it brings together fourteen villages of Babia with about 685 inhabitants in total, where Leonese is still used, with both oral presence and bibliographical production. Its economy was linked to mining, now closed, by companies such as Minero Siderúrgica de Ponferrada; the high mountains have traditionally given it very poor communications with the rest of the province.
Church of El Salvador de Cabrillanes
Monument
The parish church of the municipal seat, next to the town hall in the heart of Babia de Arriba; its limestone fabric follows the austere model of the churches of the Babia mountains.
Church of Torre de Babia
Monument
The church of the settlement of Torre de Babia, one of the fourteen centres of a municipality spread across high valleys where the houses cluster around the church and the communal summer pastures.
The highest municipality in the province of León
Nature
With its seat at 1,249 metres, Cabrillanes is the municipality of highest average altitude in León: 170 square kilometres of high pastures, brañas and villages such as La Cueta or Vega de Viejos wedged beneath limestone summits.
Biosphere Reserve of Babia
Nature
Unesco declared Babia a biosphere reserve in 2004 for the value of its upland pastures and its mosaic of meadows and mountains, a landscape shaped by centuries of transhumant livestock farming and summer grazing. It covers 38,018 hectares of the municipalities of Cabrillanes and San Emiliano (La Montaña de Luna, León), between a line of peaks that to the north rises above 2,000 metres, such as Peña Ubiña, and the peak of La Cañada (2,154 m) to the south. Extensive livestock farming has shaped its flora, with endemic species exclusive to the region such as Saxifraga babiana, and its fauna notably includes the brown bear, endangered, the grey partridge and the piornal hare. Around 1,666 people live there year-round, spread across 28 settlements, the largest of them Piedrafita de Babia.
Hispano-Breton horse of Babia
Curiosity
The high pastures of Babia are Spain's main breeding centre for the Hispano-Breton horse; the mares graze loose on the heights during the summer and come down to the villages with the first autumn storms.
The patsuezu of Babia (local dialect)
Curiosity
In the villages of Cabrillanes patsuezu survives, a variety of Leonese characterised by the palatalisation of the Latin l; its trace can still be seen in the place names, which do not match the official Castilianised forms.
