What to see and do in Verea

Verea
Village
Verea is a concello in the Ourense comarca of Terra de Celanova, with its capital at Carballo, about 900 inhabitants and 94.6 km² spread over eleven parishes; in the mid-19th century it had as many as 3,450 inhabitants. Its name comes from the Latin veredam, road, because a secondary Roman road once ran through its mountains, starting from Aquis Querquennis, whose camp at A Cividá can still be traced. Nearby, the hermitage of San Trocado recalls the legend of some Portuguese who, after stealing the relics of Celanova, were paralysed by a miracle of Saint Rosendo. In the Sierra do Leboreiro megalithic remains are preserved. Its summit, the Outeiro de Ferro, marks the border with Portugal at 1,268 metres, alongside the peaks of Froufe and Penagache.
Mota Grande burial mound
Nature
One of the largest megalithic mounds in Galicia, with paintings and carvings on the slabs of its chamber; it forms part of the necropolis that extends across the Serra do Leboreiro, on the border with Portugal.
Church of San Salvador de Sanguñedo
Monument
The church of San Salvador de Sanguñedo, completed in 1707 according to the stonemason's inscription on the rear façade, was built in the early 18th century for the parish of Sanguñedo, in Verea, and is an archetype of rural Galician religious architecture. The façade, with a door topped by a plain lintel, ends in a curved cornice crowned by two pinnacles, and the bell tower, a two-arched espadaña (bell-gable) with one bell in each arch, is crowned with two further pinnacles and a lightning-rod cross. It retains three altars: the main one, with a retable carved in 1713 by Gregorio Álvarez and gilded by Agustín Vázquez, and two side altars, of the Virgen del Carmen and of the Dolores. It belongs to one of the eleven parishes of a border concello that has lost a third of its population since 2003.
Crosses of Albos
Curiosity
The church of Albos holds three remarkable crosses: an enamelled copper crucifix from the late twelfth or early thirteenth century and two processional crosses from the fourteenth century, an extraordinary group for a mountain parish.
Ferro Hill
Nature
At 1,268 metres it is the roof of the concello and one of the landmarks of the border with Portugal, followed by the Froufe, at 1,245 metres, and the Penagache. In its surroundings mine workings are found that probably explain the place name, and from these heights run down the rivers Grande, Cexo and Orille, all tributaries of the Arnoia.
The fort of Teso de Penafroufe
Curiosity
The Forte do Teso, also called Penafroufe, is an old bastioned military fortress, now in ruins, located in the parish of San Miguel de Bangueses, in the concello of Verea, on a promontory at about 820 metres of altitude, near the border with Portugal. It was built in the 17th century, during the Portuguese Restoration War and the reign of Philip IV, to defend the southern border of the Kingdom of Galicia from Portuguese troops that might attack via the Raia Seca towards Celanova; the commission, dated 1649, went to the engineer captain Juan Villarroel Prado by order of the governor of Galicia, the Count of Santiesteban. Today only the remains of the moat, the bastions and the parade ground survive, covered in scrub.
The beef of the Verea mountains
Food and drink
In a district that hovers around seven hundred and thirty metres of altitude, the cattle graze on the common hills of the border. The whole of Galicia is included in the scope of the protected geographical indication Ternera Gallega.
