What to see and do in Gomesende

Gomesende
Village
Gomesende is a concello of Terra de Celanova, in the province of Ourense, with barely 650 inhabitants, made up of six parishes, among them Poulo and O Val. For much of the Middle Ages it was royal domain land, and some hamlets passed to lay lords, such as the Puga family, patrons of the church of Poulo, the finest artistically of those owned by this lineage, while others were donated to the monastery of Celanova, such as San Lourenzo de Fustáns. An old royal road crossed the territory from Arnoia, passing through the sanctuary of O Val and going down through Poulo, on the Ribeiro wine route toward Celanova. It preserves two pilgrimage sanctuaries, the neoclassical one of Nosa Señora da Guía and the Baroque one do Val de Poulo, perched on a hilltop.
Shrine of a Nosa Señora do Val
Monument
Baroque pilgrimage shrine, at Poulo, whose silhouette stands out for a double octagonal lantern, front and back, of notable height; beside it remains of old chapels and of thermal baths are preserved, and a dependent monastery was once planned that was never built. It shares prominence with the Neoclassical shrine of Nosa Señora da Guía, in the same concello.
Shrine of a Nosa Señora da Guía
Monument
Marian sanctuary of Neoclassical design with an altarpiece façade crowned by a pediment with inverted volutes and pinnacles; it gives its name to one of the six parishes of this small concello of the lower Arnoia.
Boundary marker of the Crosses
Nature
Summit of 869 metres that crowns the municipality, above the hills of O Viso and A Silva Escura, and from which the confluence of the rivers Arnoia, Deva and San Francisco, which water and structure the concello, is commanded. Along its skirts ran the old route that carried the wine of the Ribeiro from Pontevedra to Celanova.
