The fort of Teso de Penafroufe Curiosity · Verea, Terra de Celanova, Ourense Image of Verea, not of the place itself. The Forte do Teso, also called Penafroufe, is an old bastioned military fortress, now in ruins, located in the parish of San Miguel de Bangueses, in the concello of Verea, on a promontory at about 820 metres of altitude, near the border with Portugal. It was built in the 17th century, during the Portuguese Restoration War and the reign of Philip IV, to defend the southern border of the Kingdom of Galicia from Portuguese troops that might attack via the Raia Seca towards Celanova; the commission, dated 1649, went to the engineer captain Juan Villarroel Prado by order of the governor of Galicia, the Count of Santiesteban. Today only the remains of the moat, the bastions and the parade ground survive, covered in scrub. Photo: espinya (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Verea
