What to see and do in Rairiz de Veiga

Rairiz de Veiga
Village
Rairiz de Veiga is a concello in the comarca of La Limia, in the province of Ourense, situated on part of the now-vanished Lagoa de Antela, with around 1,150 inhabitants spread across eight parishes. It forms part of the Área de Allariz biosphere reserve, a border territory between the Mediterranean and Eurosiberian worlds, and preserves its traditional farming system, having escaped the land consolidation of the 1960s. The remains of pile-dwelling settlements found in the area, circular in plan and built of wood and mud, and the Roman Vía Nova, which linked Bracara Augusta with Asturica Augusta and crossed the Limia at the Pedriña bridge, bear witness to a very ancient settlement. Its wetland moors and oak groves are included in the Natura Network, and the Carballa da Sainza stands out, a monumental oak over thirty metres tall declared a natural monument, as does the ethnographic village of Congostro, a fine example of popular Limia architecture with its hórreos grouped around the Plaza da Aira da Moa.
Hillfort of Monte Albán
Nature
A fortified settlement in the parish of Sabariz excavated in the early 20th century by Florentino López Cuevillas and Vicente Risco, two founders of modern Galician archaeology; bell beaker pottery turned up among the material.
Church of Santo André de Guillamil
Monument
Romanesque temple in one of the eight parishes of the concello and the oldest of a group in which the churches of Lampaza and Rairiz are of the eighteenth century with Renaissance doorways, while those of Candás, Congostro, Ordes and Sabariz already answer to the Baroque.
Da Rocha oak
Nature
An oak located in Saínza de Abaixo, next to the Limia river and near the old Lagoa de Antela, within the biosphere reserve of the Área de Allariz. It is one of the tallest in Spain: it grows free of branches up to six metres, where it forks into two branches that reach thirty-three metres, and its trunk, about 8.2 metres in girth, needs several people to embrace it. It is estimated to be about five hundred years old and to have last been pollarded in the 1950s; it is one of the last surviving examples of an old carballeira that once grew beside the Lagoa de Antela. It was declared a natural monument and solitary tree in 2007, and every 24 September it hosts the Romaría da Saínza, a festival that re-enacts the struggle between Christians and Muslims.
Pilgrimage of a Saínza
Activity
A pilgrimage festival held in the oak grove of Saínza de Abaixo, in the shade of the monumental oak of the Carballa da Rocha, on the banks of the Limia and a step away from the protected area of the Veiga de Ponteliñares.
The Vega of Ponteliñares
Nature
A Galician natural area classified as a special area of conservation that brings together the veigas of the plains of the upper course of the river Limia, south of the vanished lagoon of Antela, spread between the Limia concellos of Porqueira and Rairiz de Veiga. It covers 160 hectares of hay meadows and riverside woods of alders and ash trees, with heathlands of Erica ciliaris and tetralix, and is home to one of the few Galician natural areas where the marsh eryngo (Eryngium viviparum) grows. Its fauna includes the little bustard, the short-eared owl and the smooth snake. Declared a site of community importance in 2004 and a special area of conservation in 2014, it also forms part of the Limia SPA, the Natura 2000 network and the Área de Allariz biosphere reserve.
Birdwatching in the Vega of Ponteliñares
Activity
The waterlogged remains of Antela still attract ducks, waders and herons, above all during the migration passages. Observatories and paths allow a wetland protected within the Natura 2000 Network to be walked.
