What to see and do in Quintela de Leirado

Quintela de Leirado
Village
Quintela de Leirado is an Ourense concello of fewer than 600 inhabitants, situated in the valley of the Deva river, beneath the foothills of the Sierra de Leboreiro, which at Penagache reaches 1,213 metres. Its first inhabitants were the Coelerni, to whom the later Romanised castro of Redemuíños is attributed. The territory, divided into five parishes, was part in the Middle Ages of the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the monastery of San Pedro de Ramirás and of the lordship of the Marquis of Malpica. Among its heritage the Baroque church of San Pedro de Leirado stands out, built between 1600 and 1701, and the rural chapel of the Virgen de los Remedios, from the 17th century, with a Renaissance Marian-type altarpiece. Since 2021, a museum has recalled the intense emigration of its residents to Equatorial Guinea.
Church of San Pedro de Leirado
Monument
Baroque church built between 1600 and 1701 that presides over the capital of a concello of only five parishes, historically linked to the monasteries of Celanova and Ramirás; its festival is held on 29 July. In the neighbouring chapel of the Virxe dos Remedios a Renaissance altarpiece of a Marian theme uncommon in the comarca is preserved.
Museum of a Emigración a Guinea Ecuatorial
Monument
Opened in December 2021, it documents a little-known migratory current: the departure of people from this comarca towards Spanish Guinea, the old colony in the Gulf of Guinea. It is one of the few museums devoted exclusively to that emigration and a museum rarity in a concello that does not reach six hundred inhabitants.
Deva River Valley
Nature
The Deva, a tributary of the Miño, structures the municipality and separates the lowlands from the heights of the northwest, which are around seven hundred to nine hundred metres; its valley concentrates the settlements of the five parishes.
Penagache
Nature
A 1,213-metre summit in the foothills of the Serra do Leboreiro that close off the concello to the south; at these border heights, above a thousand metres, settlement disappears entirely. The mountain forms the boundary between the concellos of Verea and Quintela de Leirado. In the post-war years, many local residents turned to smuggling, taking advantage of its closeness to the Raya Seca (the "dry line" border): they crossed the sierra by night, often in snow, rain and wind, to reach Castro Laboreiro, in Portugal, loaded with coffee, lighter flints and salt cod. Because of this a Guardia Civil barracks was eventually built in the area, and before Spain's entry into the European Union, mayors and officials from the concellos along the Galician-Portuguese border met there every year to review the boundaries between Galicia and Portugal.
