What to see and do in A Bola

A Bola
Village
A Bola is a municipality in the comarca of Terra de Celanova, in Ourense, with its capital at Campo de Veiga and about 1,139 inhabitants over 39.9 km². It stretches between the valley of the Arnoia river, whose main tributary is the Orille, and the Sierra del Leboreiro, on whose foothills rise the peaks of Furriolo, Monte Calvo and San Ciprián, which at 914 metres is the highest point in the municipality. Its economy rests on the cultivation of maize, wheat, rye and potatoes, and on a notable production of chestnuts, in a landscape of pines, oaks and chestnut trees. It preserves the Romanesque church of San Munio de Veiga and the pazos of Berredo, Podentes and Sorga. Every year the Subida al Furriolo is held, a Galician rally that runs through various points of the municipality.
Church of San Munio de Veiga
Monument
Temple of early medieval root, with carved tympana on one of its doors, belonging to the old monastery of San Munio, documented as early as the ninth century and dependent on the orbit of Celanova. It is the greatest piece of heritage of a concello of eight parishes and little more than a thousand inhabitants.
Granite ball of A Bola
Curiosity
The concello of A Bola, in the Terra de Celanova comarca, in the province of Orense, owes its name to a granite ball located at the site that gives the municipality its name, shaped by perpendicular fractures that left blocks in balance and which also gave rise to the municipal coat of arms. The municipal area, covering 39.9 square kilometres, lies on the eastern foothills of the sierra del Leboreiro, between 300 and 600 metres average altitude, with Monte de San Ciprián as its highest point, at 914 metres. It is a case of toponymy born directly from the landscape, similar to that of other Galician places where a striking natural feature ended up giving its name to an entire municipality.
Mount San Cibrao
Nature
At 914 metres it is the greatest height of a concello of barely thirty-five square kilometres set at 510 metres on average, on the buttresses of the Serra do Leboreiro and with a climate of continental cast. It is a realm of granite outcrops and scrub from which the Arnoia valley can be taken in; granite here shapes the landscape as much as vernacular architecture.
