What to see and do in Ramirás

Ramirás
Village
Ramirás, a municipality of about 1,480 inhabitants in the Ourense comarca of Terra de Celanova, came into being in 1926 with the merger of the former municipalities of Freás de Eiras and Vilameá. Its first inhabitants, the Coelerni, built the castros of Grixó and Marnotos; in the Middle Ages the territory came under the rule of the monastery of Celanova, which fought long disputes with the nuns of the monastery of San Pedro de Ramirás until it achieved the extinction of that female community. This monastery, founded in the 10th century by Abbess Omnéga, became a Benedictine convent in 1137 and preserves a church begun in Romanesque style and finished in Gothic. Part of the PR-G 143 route runs through the municipality, along the Arnoia river, for about eleven kilometres between the sanctuary of Nosa Señora do Val and Escudeiros.
Monastery of San Pedro de Ramirás
Monument
Nunnery founded in the tenth century by Omnéga, an abbess coming from Santa Comba de Bande, which figured as a Benedictine convent in 1137 and depended for centuries on the orbit of the monastery of Celanova. Its church was begun in Romanesque and completed in Gothic, a mixture visible in the arches and vaults of the temple.
Hillfort of Grixó
Nature
One of the two fortified settlements that the Coelerni built in this district, along with that of Marnotos; the present concello was born in 1926 from the merger of Freás de Eiras and Vilameá de Ramirás, in the lower Arnoia valley.
Trail of o río Arnoia PR-G 143
Activity
Approved footpath of some eleven kilometres in a straight line that follows the Arnoia from the shrine of Nosa Señora do Val, already in Gomesende, to the parish of Escudeiros, passing mills, weirs and riverside woods. It covers the lower stretch of the river before its meeting with the Miño and links the two concellos along the valley floor.
