What to see and do in Lobeira

Lobeira
Village
Lobeira is a concello of about 700 inhabitants in the comarca of Baixa Limia, on the right bank of the Limia river, next to the sierra del Laboreiro, eight kilometres from Bande. A kilometre from the capital rises Monte de O Viso, from which the Limia valley and the sierra de O Xurés, the border with Portugal, can be seen; there, at 852 metres, stands the ermida do Viso, built on a castro in a case of Christianisation of ancient cults, which preserves Romanesque remains and an 18th-century altarpiece and hosts one of the area's most important pilgrimages. In 1809 the Junta de Lobeira directed the Galician resistance against the French from here. It lives mainly on the growing of potatoes, maize and vegetables and on livestock farming for family consumption.
Hermitage of o Viso
Monument
A late Romanesque shrine built at 852 metres on Monte do Viso, on top of an old hillfort; it holds an 18th-century altarpiece and an image of the Virgin from the late 19th, and its atrium commands the whole of the Baixa Limia.
Church of San Xés de Vilariño
Monument
A late Baroque church on a Latin-cross plan, destroyed by lightning in 1928 and rebuilt afterwards by the parishioners themselves; it gives its name to one of the eight parishes into which this mountain municipality is divided.
Chapel of as Quintas
Monument
Built in 1728 and dedicated to San Lourenzo, it stands out for its porch with a three-sided pitched roof, an uncommon solution among the comarca's rural chapels; it stands in a municipality whose altitudes range from 400 to 1,300 metres.
Seven Crosses of Rebolar petroglyphs
Curiosity
Rock carvings at 1,125 metres in the parish of San Xes de Vilariño; the municipality has two other sites, Pena Franqueira, between Fraga and Parada, and Penafiel, towards Sabariz.
1809 Junta of Lobeira
Curiosity
In January 1809 Lobeira acted as the capital of Galicia: the Junta chaired by bishop Pedro Quevedo y Quintano met here, in the only Galician territory still free of French occupation.
Mountain range of o Leboreiro en Lobeira
Nature
It skirts the municipality and explains its stepped vegetation: mountain scrub on the summits and, lower down, oak woods with birches, ash and alders following the courses of the Grou, the Fragoso and the Trasentes.
Xurés Ethnography Interpretation Centre
Monument
Housed in Lobeira, it explains the traditional ways of life of the Baixa Limia-Serra do Xurés natural park, in a municipality that went from 1,264 inhabitants in 2001 to little more than seven hundred in 2024.
Church of San Martiño de Grou
Monument
A parish church of simple architecture in the valley of the río Grou, one of the eight parishes of Lobeira; its interior preserves a set of images that stands out against the austerity of the building.
Church of San Vicente de Lobeira
Monument
The parish church of the municipal capital, dedicated to San Vicente, in the town that king Afonso IX endowed with a charter in 1228; it presides over the settlement from which the valley of the Limia and the das Conchas reservoir are commanded.
Mount of o Viso
Nature
A hill of 852 metres that dominates the valley of the Limia and on which an ancient castro was settled; its summit, crowned by a sanctuary raised around 1300, is one of the great natural viewpoints of the Baixa Limia.
Grou River
Nature
The main tributary of the municipal district of Lobeira, which comes down from the sierra of the Leboreiro among riverside woods and mills before delivering its waters to the Limia; it gives its name to three of the concello's parishes.
Petroglyphs of the Pena Franqueira
Curiosity
Open-air rock carvings on the boundary between the parishes of A Fraga and Parada; together with those of Penafiel, on the monte de San Xes, they complete the map of rock art of the concello of Lobeira.
The charter of Lobeira granted by Alfonso IX
Historical milestone
King Afonso IX of León granted in 1228 a charter to the town of Lobeira, recognizing privileges of its own in a comarca disputed for centuries between the monastery of Celanova and the lay lords of the frontier.
