What to see and do in Cartelle

Cartelle
Village
Cartelle is a municipality in the comarca of Terra de Celanova, in the province of Ourense, with about 2,470 inhabitants and its capital in the hamlet of Outomuro, situated in the basin of the Arnoia river. During the Middle Ages it was under the influence of the monastery of Celanova, whose abbot received the castle of Sande in 1141, the first documented mention of Cartelle, and whose monks promoted the cultivation of vineyards in the area. The present-day municipality was created with the 1835 reform and in 1860 incorporated the parishes of Espiñoso and Penela, until then part of Vilanova dos Infantes. It preserves the ponte do Freixo, one of the few intact Roman bridges in Galicia, and has celebrated the fiesta das Marabillas since 1646, with floral arches and an auction of local produce.
Roman bridge of Freixo
Monument
A Roman bridge over the Arnoia river, between the parishes of Freixo (Celanova) and Penela, in the municipal area of Cartelle, declared a historical-artistic monument in 1984; together with the Bibei bridge, it is one of only two entirely Roman bridges preserved in Galicia. Built in opus quadratum with rusticated granite ashlars, it measures 57 metres long by 4.60 metres wide and has four semicircular arches arranged symmetrically; it is attributed the status of a secondary branch of the Via Nova, although other authors link it to the Brigantia-Iria Flavia road. During restoration works a fragment of a milestone column with an inscription appeared beneath the road surface. Its heritage value was not recognised until 1976, when Rodríguez Colmenero identified it as a Roman work.
Tower of Sande
Monument
Fortress already mentioned in 1141, when Alfonso VII donated the castle to the monastery of Celanova; declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) in 1949, for years it has suffered a decay that keeps it among endangered heritage.
Carnival of as Bonitas de Sande
Activity
The bonitos of Sande come out in a white shirt, red tie, white cotton trousers and silk scarves; tradition places the origin of that costume in the return of the soldiers from the Philippines war.
Ponte Nova recreation area
Nature
Spot on the banks of the Arnoia, at the point where the river separates Cartelle from Ramirás, next to the 16th- and 17th-century bridge that gives it its name; it is the most visited natural area of a concello of 94 square kilometres.
Festival of as Marabillas
Activity
Marian celebration documented since 1646 in the parish of As Marabillas, with a procession of the Virgin beneath floral arches and an auction of local produce at the end. It brings together the people of the concello's parishes and of the neighbouring municipalities: it is the great pilgrimage of Cartelle, the municipality's principal festive occasion and one of the oldest in the Terra de Celanova.
The donation of the Torre de Sande
Historical milestone
In 1141 the Torre de Sande was donated to the monastery of Celanova, which documents the implantation of monastic lordship in Cartelle. The fortification, badly deteriorated, figures on the lists of heritage at risk.
