Roman bridge of Freixo Monument · Cartelle, Terra de Celanova, Ourense A Roman bridge over the Arnoia river, between the parishes of Freixo (Celanova) and Penela, in the municipal area of Cartelle, declared a historical-artistic monument in 1984; together with the Bibei bridge, it is one of only two entirely Roman bridges preserved in Galicia. Built in opus quadratum with rusticated granite ashlars, it measures 57 metres long by 4.60 metres wide and has four semicircular arches arranged symmetrically; it is attributed the status of a secondary branch of the Via Nova, although other authors link it to the Brigantia-Iria Flavia road. During restoration works a fragment of a milestone column with an inscription appeared beneath the road surface. Its heritage value was not recognised until 1976, when Rodríguez Colmenero identified it as a Roman work. Photo: Ramon Piñeiro (CC BY-SA 2.0) What to see and do in Cartelle
