What to see and do in Cenlle

Cenlle
Village
Cenlle is a concello in the comarca of Ribeiro, in the province of Ourense, with around 1,100 inhabitants spread across ten parishes between the rivers Avia and Miño, which border the municipality on the west and east. Viticulture is its most widespread agricultural activity, covering 93% of cultivated land, the highest proportion in all of Ribeiro; grown on terraces because of the irregular terrain, it produces both white grapes such as Treixadura and Godello and red ones such as Mencía or Grenache. It preserves the Romanesque church of San Miguel de Osmo and, beside the Miño, the Laias spa, a modern thermal establishment. Bishop Hydatius, in his Chronicle, places near Laias the discovery by some fishermen of four golden fish in the river Miño, interpreted as a bad omen.
Hillfort of Laias
Nature
A fortified settlement inhabited between the 9th century BC and the 1st century AD, badly damaged by the motorway works; the excavations opened since 2016 have brought to light round huts and a Roman wine press carved into the rock.
Church of San Miguel de Osmo
Monument
Romanesque church heavily altered during the Renaissance, situated beneath an oak grove (carballeira) in Osmo, presiding over one of the wine-growing parishes of Cenlle; possibly privately founded by the Count of Ribadavia, it owes its present appearance to 18th-century renovations. Of the Romanesque core only three geometric corbels remain on the south wall. The Renaissance doorway, with human heads, an angel and two shields of the Ribadavia family, is topped by a two-tier bell-gable. Inside it preserves an interesting set of Mannerist paintings, rare in the rural churches of the area: the Predela de San Miguel, eight oil panels from the first quarter of the 17th century, on the altar of San Francisco. Its fabric sums up the constructive history of the churches of the Ribeiro, medieval in origin and refurbished in the early modern period.
Roman gold mining site of Laias
Curiosity
In the parish of Laias there survive remains, badly damaged by the motorway, of gold mining from Roman times or earlier, worked with the arrugia and ruina montium techniques described by Pliny the Elder.
Spa of Laias
Activity
The balneario de Laias is a spa establishment located in the parish of Laias, on the banks of the river Miño, in the municipality (concello) of Cenlle. Opened in April 2001, its waters emerge at a temperature of 54 degrees and the complex offers hydromassage, sauna and jet showers, as well as an outdoor heated pool. It lies in a municipality where vineyards cover 93.47 per cent of the cultivated land, the highest percentage in the whole Ribeiro region.
The height of A Corredoira
Nature
At 489 metres it is the greatest height of the concello, a balcony over the interfluve between the Avia and the Miño. From its surroundings one takes in a district in which the vine occupies more than ninety per cent of the cultivated land.
The Casa Grande of Lentille
Curiosity
The Casa Grande de Lentille stands in the parish of San Lourenzo da Pena, in Cenlle, set on rocky ground whose own crags form part of the foundations, visible beneath the solaina on the eastern corner. With a U-shaped floor plan and a façade facing southeast, enclosed by a wall with a blazoned gateway, it represents the model of hidalgo residence typical of the Ribeiro: not a courtly pazo, but the house of an owner linked to the vineyard. In the courtyard, the three wings are lined by a solaina resting on arcades and pseudo-Doric columns, beneath a large wooden eave; the roof, with four slopes, ends in three chimneys. It preserves the original kitchen, with hearth, oven and tiled floor. Very close by stands another pazo, the Casa dos Toubes.
The white grape varieties of Ribeiro in Cenlle
Food and drink
In a concello where the vineyard occupies 93 per cent of the cultivated area, the white varieties treixadura and albariño dominate, accompanied by reds such as caíño mouro, the basis of the wines around the Avia.
