What to see and do in Cortegada

Cortegada
Village
Cortegada is an Ourense concello in the comarca of Ribeiro whose southern boundary is marked by the river Miño, the border with Portugal, dammed along this stretch between the Castrelo and Frieira reservoirs. A spa town also known as Cortegada de Baños, its sulphurous, iron-rich waters emerge at 38 degrees and sustained a spa opened in 1937, which declined after the Frieira reservoir flooded the area in the 1970s. During the Middle Ages the territory was organised as the Coto de la Vestiaria under the lordship of the monastery of Celanova, to which free peasants donated land to avoid royal taxes, while families such as the Puga and the Cid maintained small lordships with pazos at Meréns, Louredo and Valongo. It now has around a thousand inhabitants.
Palace of Meréns
Monument
Manor house dated 1789 that displays on its façade the largest heraldic coat of arms in Galicia, with eighteen quarters topped by a count's coronet. It presides over a parish on the bank of the Miño dotted with armorial houses, hórreos and cruceiros, the stone wayside crosses, in a concello set between the mouths of the Arnoia and the Deva.
Church of San Bieito de Rabiño
Monument
A Baroque church in the parish of Rabiño, notable for its ribbed vaults; it shares the leading role in the municipality's religious heritage with the church of San Martiño de Valongo, rebuilt in the 18th century.
Spa of Cortegada
Activity
Establishment opened in 1937 on the banks of the Miño over three springs — Pedra, Campo and Monte — of sulphurous and ferruginous waters that rise at 38 degrees, traditionally used for liver, respiratory, digestive and skin complaints.
Reservoir of a Frieira
Nature
The reservoir closed in the 1970s stills the Miño as it passes Cortegada and radically altered the riverside landscape, even changing access to the thermal springs that rise at the water's edge.
Petroglyphs of Valongo
Curiosity
Bronze Age rock carvings located in the parishes of Valongo and Louredo; to this prehistoric repertoire are added Roman altars found in the municipality with dedications to local deities.
The petroglyphs of Mount Picoñas
Curiosity
Bronze Age rock engravings in the parish of Valongo, with labyrinths and cup marks pecked into the granite. Another similar group appears at Louredo, in the same concello.
