What to see and do in Pontedeva

Pontedeva
Village
Pontedeva is the smallest concello in the Ourense comarca of Terra de Celanova, with barely 10 km² and fewer than 500 inhabitants spread over just two parishes, Pontedeva and Trado. It unfolds in the valley opened by the Deva river, on whose banks there is evidence of pre-Roman settlement, with the castros of Valiño and A Senra, and along which a Roman road once ran. In the Middle Ages, until the late 18th century, justice and taxation in the area depended on the Marquis of Malpica. The municipality preserves the churches of San Breixo, in Pontedeva, and of San Paio, in Trado, alongside the hermitage of San Xusto and manor houses such as the Pazo na Aldea. Fishing in the Deva, once popular, has declined due to the construction of a mini hydroelectric plant at Quintela.
Bridge of Xinzo
Monument
Bridge over the river Deva in the parish of Trado, in a concello of only two parishes and 458 inhabitants in 2025; nearby stand the pazos of Aldea and Trado and the old prison of Freáns.
Deva Valley in Pontedeva
Nature
The Deva forms here a fertile valley of steep slopes that marks the northern boundary of the municipality before giving itself up to the Miño, with oak woods, chestnuts, pines and eucalyptus on the sides and open panoramas from the heights of Trado; the greatest height of the district is the Penedo do Monte, to the west, and two approved footpaths of some seven kilometres allow it to be walked.
Trail of o Monte San Xusto
Activity
A circular trail of about seven kilometres, waymarked as PR-G 175, that climbs to the hermitage of San Xusto in the parish of Trado; the concello also offers the Deva river route, of similar length.
Eel fishing in the Deva
Food and drink
The Deva valley sustained for generations a river fishery of eel and trout that supplied the tables of the comarca. The hydroelectric works drastically reduced that activity.
