What to see and do in Castrelo de Miño

Castrelo de Miño
Village
Castrelo de Miño is a concello of around 1,300 inhabitants located in the heart of the Ourense Ribeiro, on the left bank of the river Miño, with some twenty wineries of the Ribeiro designation of origin. Known in the Middle Ages as Castrum Minei, it was linked to a double monastery that belonged successively to the bishop of Ourense, to the Order of St John of Jerusalem and to the commandery of Quiroga. In that monastery, King Sancho I the Fat of León died poisoned in 967, at the hands of a count named Gonzalo. Its church of Santa María preserves 12th-century Romanesque fabric, with a tower and semicircular apse, although much of the building was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1763.
Church of Santa María de Castrelo
Monument
It preserves part of the Romanesque tower and a semicircular twelfth-century apse with reliefs and a triumphal arch of the same date, integrated into a Baroque rebuilding dated 1763. It was the church of an old monastery that came to be governed by the abbess Dona Goto and it is the principal monument of the concello.
Reservoir of Castrelo de Miño
Nature
A reservoir built in 1969 by FENOSA that flooded some of the most fertile bottomland in the Ribeiro and completely transformed the landscape of the Miño, turning the river into a broad sheet of water edged with vineyards.
Sailing Club of Castrelo de Miño
Activity
A sports facility with more than twenty-five years of activity on the reservoir, where sailing, rowing and canoeing are practised on the flat, broad stretch where the Miño is dammed.
Poisoning of Sancho I the Fat
Curiosity
It was on this land that Sancho I the Fat, king of León, was poisoned to death in the year 967, an episode tied to the old double monastery of Castrelo, which passed in turn through the hands of the bishop of Ourense and of several orders.
The water sports centre of the Castrelo de Miño reservoir
Activity
On the sheet of the reservoir there has operated since 1991 the chief inland water sports centre of Galicia, with schools of sailing, rowing and canoeing that make use of the calm waters of the dammed Miño.
The flooding of the lowlands of Castrelo de Miño
Historical milestone
The reservoir built in 1969 flooded the most fertile bottomlands of the concello and forced the expropriation of lands and vineyards. The protest of the residents is considered one of the first environmental conflicts of contemporary Galicia.
The eel of the Miño in Castrelo
Food and drink
The festivities of Nosa Señora das Neves turn on the eel of the Miño, stewed according to the recipes of the riverside fishermen. They keep alive a river fishing that the reservoir completely transformed.
