Fortress already mentioned in 1141, when Alfonso VII donated the castle to the monastery of Celanova; declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) in 1949, for years it has suffered a decay that keeps it among endangered heritage.
