What to see and do in Bergondo

Bergondo
Village
Bergondo is a municipality of about 7,000 inhabitants (7,135 according to the 2025 register) located in the centre of the province of A Coruña, within its metropolitan area, and bathed by the ria of Betanzos. Documented since 1138 as Burgundium, it is known as a Xoia das Mariñas for its long tradition of fine jewellery workshops, which some trace back to the arrival of Jewish craftsmen after their expulsion by the Catholic Monarchs. Its district is notable for Gandarío beach and the Pazo de Mariñán, with its gardens overlooking the estuary. It also preserves the Romanesque church of Saint Saviour, from the 12th century, a former Benedictine priory, within a municipality organised into nine parishes.
Palace of Mariñán
Monument
The pazo de Mariñán is 25 km from A Coruña, on the left bank of the Mandeo river, very close to Betanzos and Pontedeume. It dates back to the 15th century, when Gómez Pérez das Mariñas, a nobleman of the court of John II of Castile and a leading figure of the Irmandiña War (1467-1469), had a defensive structure built here then known as the Pazo de Bergondo. Enlarged in a Baroque vein, its façades display the coats of arms of the Romay, Bermúdez de Castro and Suárez de Deza families, and a French-style garden with species listed as singular trees of Galicia. When its last owner, the Lord of Láncara, died without descendants in 1936, it passed to the Deputación da Coruña, and it has been a historic-artistic ensemble since 1972.
Monastery of San Salvador de Bergondo
Monument
A Benedictine house documented in 1138 under Abbot Frei Recendus; a fire in 1338 destroyed the complex and only the Romanesque church survived, rebuilt with help from the Andrade family, and it was declared a Monumento Nacional (Spain's heritage designation in force until 1931) in 1973.
Beach of Gandarío
Nature
Sandy beach of the parish of Ouces, in the ría of Betanzos, the main one of the concello of Bergondo along with the beaches of O Pedrido and Regueiro; it lies sheltered at the head of the estuary.
Hillfort of o Monte da Fame
Nature
Fortified settlement of the parish of Guísamo, one of the nine castros catalogued in Bergondo together with those of Rebodero, Os Fornos, Carrio, Montecelo, Pazos and Santa Marta de Babío.
Museum of o Pazo de Mariñán
Monument
An 18th-century manor house at Mariñán, in the municipality of Bergondo, on the banks of the Mandeo river and near Betanzos and Pontedeume, declared a historic-artistic site in 1972. It originated in a defensive structure raised in the 15th century by Gómez Pérez das Mariñas, and passed down from generation to generation until, when its last owner died without descendants in 1936, it was bequeathed to the Diputación of A Coruña; for this reason it was also known as the Pazo de Láncara. The building, with Baroque features, and its French garden — with specimens catalogued as árbores senlleiras de Galicia (Galicia's notable trees), including an érbedo and a nogueira pecán — overlook the ría de Betanzos. It houses a picture gallery of 19th- and 20th-century paintings, many of them Galician, and rooms with 19th-century furniture, also famous for its rear staircase.
