What to see and do in Vilarmaior

Vilarmaior
Village
Vilarmaior is a municipality of about 1,240 inhabitants in the comarca of Betanzos, in the province of A Coruña, spread across six parishes beneath the mountains of O Catasol (440 m) and O Seixo Grande. In the parish of Grandal a Roman funerary stele appeared in 1938, today preserved in the Museo Arqueológico e Histórico del Castillo de San Antón, in A Coruña. The municipality's lands were granted in the 9th century by King Alfonso II of Oviedo to the bishop of Mondoñedo, and in 1185 the monastery of Caaveiro received the right to three-quarters of the revenues of the church of Doroña, of Romanesque style and dating from the 12th century; during the Middle Ages, the lands of Vilarmaior formed part of the county of Pruzos.
Church of Santa María de Doroña
Monument
Twelfth-century Romanesque church in the parish of Doroña, of a single nave, short presbytery and a semicircular apse raised on a stepped base; it is the most outstanding monumental piece of a concello of little more than thirty square kilometres spread across six rural parishes, in which religious heritage dominates over civil.
Mount Catasol
Nature
A 440-metre summit, the highest in the municipality, in a territory of oceanic climate with an average annual temperature of 11.8 degrees; it shares the limelight with the neighbouring Monte Grande, 374 metres high.
