What to see and do in Cambre

Cambre
Village
Cambre is a town in the province of A Coruña, with about 24,000 inhabitants in twelve parishes, 12 kilometres from the capital, within its metropolitan area, and crossed by the English Way to Santiago. The parishes close to the city have been built up in recent decades, while to the south the landscape remains rural, with kiwi plantations and mink farms. In Cecebre lies the Fraga de Cecebre, a protected area that inspired Wenceslao Fernández Flórez's novel El bosque animado; it preserves the Villa Florentina, the writer's house, now a House-Museum open to the public. On the banks of the river Mero, Cambre preserves the Romanesque church of Santa María, from the 12th century, and a Roman villa discovered in 1998; the woods between Cecebre and Bribes complete the novel's landscape.
Church of Santa María de Cambre
Monument
Parish church in the Compostelan Romanesque style, on the banks of the Mero river, in the centre of the concello of Cambre. It arose from a family monastery of the early Middle Ages, founded by the knight Alvito and his sisters, which in the year 932 came under the authority of San Paio de Antealtares and, from 1489, of San Martiño Pinario; it was sacked and burned by the English in 1589 and by the French in 1809, and had to be largely rebuilt. Its present fabric, from the late 12th century, was completed in the 13th century with a proto-Gothic chevet of five radiating chapels inspired by the cathedral of Santiago. It was declared a national monument on 3 June 1931 and preserves the font known as the Hidria de Xerusalén.
Fraga de Cecebre
Nature
An Atlantic wood of oaks and chestnuts in the parish of Cecebre that Wenceslao Fernández Flórez made the protagonist of El bosque animado, published in 1943 and reissued more than a hundred times since.
House of Wenceslao Fernández Flórez
Curiosity
The house of Wenceslao Fernández Flórez, at the San Salvador de Cecebre halt (Cambre), is where the writer from A Coruña spent his summers from 1913 onward, first at Carmen's house, in Piñeiro, and finally in his own little house at the halt, until the end of his days. Nearby stands the Fraga de Cecebre, the forest that inspired his best-known novel, El bosque animado, later adapted into an animated film. Today the house, known as Villa Florentina, functions as a house-museum and interpretation centre for the writer under the auspices of his foundation, the Diputación de La Coruña and the Ayuntamiento de Cambre, and preserves its domestic atmosphere.
Mero River
Nature
The Mero river rises in the Tieira mountains and, after about 41 kilometres, crosses Cambre from the Abegondo-Cecebre reservoir to its mouth in the ría del Burgo; its floodplain, with alder woods and mills, forms part of the Mariñas Coruñesas biosphere reserve. The reservoir, at its confluence with the Barcés river, is a special area of conservation and supplies drinking water to the A Coruña area. In the past it was navigable as far as the port of Sigrás, with barges supplying A Coruña's Casa de la Especiería, and is today limited by the A Barcala dam, whose removal the then mayor of Cambre, Antonio Varela, requested unsuccessfully in 1990. Channelling works on its final stretch were completed in 2007, and it now has a small jetty at O Temple for small boats.
