What to see and do in Paderne

Paderne
Village
Paderne is a municipality of the province of A Coruña, in the comarca of Betanzos, with about 2,400 inhabitants across 39.8 square kilometres watered by the Mandeo and Lambre rivers, in nine parishes; its coat of arms, with a bridge and a wild boar flanked by two scallop shells, recalls the passage of the Camino de Santiago inglés beside the ria. At the mouth of the Lambre, reached via the Ponte do Porco — attributed to Fernán Pérez de Andrade —, lies da Abeleira beach, where until the mid-20th century small boats were built for traditional fishing and shellfish gathering. Near the hermitage of San Cosme there is a necropolis with mámoas and dolmens, and the municipality has five castros in total. It was over the Ponte do Porco that John Adams passed in 1779, leaving in writing an account of the fertility of these lands.
Bridge of o Porco
Monument
A medieval bridge over the River Lambre ordered built in the 14th century by Fernán Pérez de Andrade, the same lord who paid for the church of San Francisco in Betanzos; ever since, it has marked the way into the municipality from the estuary.
Bridge of o Pedrido
Monument
The bridge do Pedrido crosses the ría de Betanzos in an arch and links the municipalities of Bergondo and Paderne, spanning the mouth of the Mandeo at a point where, for centuries, the two banks were connected only by a rowing-boat ferry service. Designed by the engineers Eduardo Torroja Miret, one of the great names of 20th-century Spanish construction, and César Villalba Granda to carry the road between A Coruña and Ferrol without hindering navigation, it was built between 1939 and 1942 and opened on 15 April 1943. More than 520 metres long, entirely of reinforced concrete, it is divided into three sections, the most emblematic being a large double arch supporting a 78.40-metre deck. It still serves the AC-164 road, although its narrowness has reduced its importance since the Atlantic motorway was built nearby.
Pico do Feal
Nature
A 409-metre height that commands the municipality and the final stretch of the River Lambre; together with Monte Petón, 338 metres, and O Penedo, 319, it forms the relief that separates the Mandeo and Lambre basins.
Festival of o Viño Branco Lexítimo
Activity
The Mostra do Branco Lexítimo has been held in Paderne since 2014, on the first weekend of July, in tribute to the branco lexítimo, a native white grape variety of Galicia considered the oldest in the country, traditionally grown on the slopes running down to the Mandeo and the Lambre. Cultivation nearly died out because of blight between the nineteenth century and the late twentieth, and its wines, with no recognised commercial name, stayed off the labels until 2011, when the Boletín Oficial del Estado officially registered the variety, thanks to the work of the Misión Biolóxica de Galicia of the CSIC. Today there are nine registered producers in Galicia, six of them in the Betanzos area itself, and the event has become the leading gastronomic celebration of this nine-parish concello.
The mills of the Lambre
Curiosity
Remains of the 18th-century mills stepped along the river Lambre, raised originally to supply the arsenal of Ferrol. They mark the oldest industrial landscape of the concello.
The Branco Lexítimo Exhibition (native white grape variety)
Food and drink
The branco lexítimo is a native white grape variety of Galicia, the oldest of those existing in the country; its harvest is concentrated in the lands of Betanzos and Paderne. For centuries wine was made with this variety until, between the 19th century and the late 20th, various plagues destroyed much of the vineyards; the wines had no commercial outlet, since the labels did not record the grape type, and the variety did not even appear in the official register until, in 2011, the BOE published the order that registered it, thanks to the work of the Misión Biolóxica de Galicia. Nine producers are registered, six in the Betanzos area. Since 2014, on the first weekend of July, the Mostra do Branco Lexítimo is held in Paderne, bringing together the growers of the comarca.
