Palace of Mariñán Monument · Bergondo, Coruña, A Coruña The pazo de Mariñán is 25 km from A Coruña, on the left bank of the Mandeo river, very close to Betanzos and Pontedeume. It dates back to the 15th century, when Gómez Pérez das Mariñas, a nobleman of the court of John II of Castile and a leading figure of the Irmandiña War (1467-1469), had a defensive structure built here then known as the Pazo de Bergondo. Enlarged in a Baroque vein, its façades display the coats of arms of the Romay, Bermúdez de Castro and Suárez de Deza families, and a French-style garden with species listed as singular trees of Galicia. When its last owner, the Lord of Láncara, died without descendants in 1936, it passed to the Deputación da Coruña, and it has been a historic-artistic ensemble since 1972.
