What to see and do in Miño

Miño
Village
Miño is a town of the comarca of Betanzos, in the province of A Coruña, open to the ria of the same name within the Mariñas of A Coruña; until 1919 it was called Castro. Through its territory run the Lambre, Bajoy and Xarío rivers, which form the marsh of the Playa Grande, the Praia Grande that made Miño a summer destination. The municipality, crossed by the N-651 road and the AP-9 motorway, is twenty minutes from A Coruña and Ferrol, and the Camino Inglés passes through it on its route to Santiago. With about 7,100 inhabitants spread across eight parishes, it preserves the Romanesque church of San Xoán de Vilanova, begun around 1040, and holds a fair in August dedicated to its flat onion.
Church of San Xoán de Vilanova
Monument
A Romanesque church in the parish of Vilanova, in the municipality of Miño, in the province of A Coruña, whose construction around 1040 marked a decisive step in the introduction of the Romanesque style in Galicia and places it among the oldest churches on the ría de Betanzos. Its semicircular apse, covered with a quarter-sphere vault, is the first of its kind in Galician Romanesque architecture, and its style, of Lombard origin, links it to the basilica of San Martiño de Mondoñedo. The nave, covered with a gabled wooden roof, retains small windows beside the apse and openings in the south wall. It stands beside the roads that once ran down from Pontedeume to the ría, and on the route of the Camino Inglés to Santiago.
Praia Grande of Miño
Nature
The praia Grande de Miño is the main beach on the ría de Betanzos, nearly a kilometre long, sheltered at the head of the estuary and with mild waters; it is linked to the town by the paseo de la Alameda and encloses marshes into which the Baxoi river flows at one end, with a small pine-covered hill at the centre of the beach. Alongside it run the beaches da Ribeira and da Alameda, forming a continuous stretch of coastline that turned this small municipality in the Mariñas area into a summer destination from the early 20th century. It has held a blue flag since 1984 - though it lost it in 2016 for lack of qualified lifeguards - and in 2012 and 2013 it was voted Spain's best beach by readers of the newspaper 20 minutos.
Beach of Perbes
Nature
A beach in the parish of Perbes, one of the four that punctuate the coast of a municipality of barely thirty-six square kilometres, looking out at once onto the Betanzos estuary and the Ártabro gulf.
The discovery of the Algara treasure
Historical milestone
On 18 March 1916, at the place called Algara, next to Bermaño, in the parish of Perbes (Miño, A Coruña), around one thousand five hundred Roman coins were discovered, made of silver, copper, tin and low-value silver alloy, known as the treasure of the Algara. The pieces, dated between the years 215 and 268, turned up inside a clay pot while work was being done on a property near the castro dos Mouros, and were eventually sold to collectors. The find confirmed the intensity of Roman settlement at the head of the Betanzos estuary.
The Onion Fair of Miño
Food and drink
A fair devoted to the onion grown in the bottomlands of the concello, held in high summer and bringing together the producers of the Mariñas. It keeps alive a market gardening of the estuary head closely tied to the markets of Betanzos.
