What to see and do in Sada

Sada
Village
Sada is a seafaring town in the province of A Coruña, on the ria of Betanzos, within the Rías Altas and the metropolitan area of A Coruña, with about 17,000 inhabitants. Its economy is based on fishing and tourism, favoured by an Atlantic climate that allows sailing, diving and fishing all year round on beaches such as Arnela, Cirro and San Pedro. Its coat of arms recalls the historic harbour, known since Phoenician and Roman times, and the castles of Fontán and Corbeiroa, built in the 18th century to protect the fishing and salting industries. The municipality is organised into eight parishes, among them Meirás, where the pazo of the same name stands. It also preserves La Terraza, a modernist pavilion of wood and glass moved from A Coruña in 1922, and it has both a fishing and a leisure harbour.
Palace of Meirás
Monument
The pazo de Meirás, also called las Torres de Meirás, is a grand house in the Romantic style built around 1900, in the late 19th century, on the ruins of an earlier building, burned by the French during the War of Independence; it was commissioned by the writer Emilia Pardo Bazán, Countess of Pardo Bazán, who wrote a good part of her work there. It consists of three crenellated towers of different sizes joined by a body of granite ashlar; in the largest, which the writer called the Torre da Quimera, stood her library, and in the chapel, with a Romanesque doorway brought from elsewhere, Pardo Bazán married on 10 July 1868. Declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2008, the Franco family used it as a summer residence from 1938, and a 2020 court ruling returned it to the State.
La Terraza
Monument
A Terraza is a Modernist pavilion of wood, wrought iron and glass, begun in 1912 to a design by the architect Antonio de Mesa and erected in the Méndez Núñez Gardens of A Coruña, in the El Relleno area, replacing the old kiosks of the port; it opened to the public on 1 July 1922. Moved by sea piece by piece to its present site on the Sada seafront around 1920, it was set on a semi-basement intended as a storeroom, to which a rear section with kitchens and services was added. In floral style, with a profusion of organic ornamental elements, a first attempt to declare it a Monument in 1975 failed to go ahead owing to the cost of its restoration; a new application in 2018 culminated in its declaration as Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2020.
Church of Santa María de Sada
Monument
Parish church of the 17th century in the seafaring centre of Sada, the oldest in the concello as against the nineteenth-century churches of Osedo, Mosteirón, Soñeiro, Veigue and Santo André de Carnoedo.
Carlos Maside Museum
Monument
The Museo Galego de Arte Contemporánea Carlos Maside occupies, at the Castro de Samoedo (Osedo, Sada), a building of hexagonal modules arranged around a central module, within the former premises of Cerámicas do Castro. It was founded in 1970 under the auspices of the Laboratorio de Formas, created in 1963 by Luís Seoane and Isaac Díaz Pardo, from donations by the founders themselves, with the aim of rescuing the work of Galicia's renewalist artists. Its first two floors hold the best collection of Galician art from the first half of the 20th century, with works by Carlos Maside himself alongside those of Castelao, Maruja Mallo, Francisco Asorey, Laxeiro and Luís Seoane, among others, while the top floor is devoted to humorous drawing. Since 1985 it has been named the Museo Galego de Arte Contemporánea.
Execution of Mayor Antonio Fernández Pita
Historical milestone
The Republican mayor of Sada was executed after the military coup, in a concello of strong working-class and Republican tradition that as early as 1868 had formed a democratic town council.
Fontán Cabbages
Food and drink
The cabbages of the Fontán floodplain have their own saying: as verzas de Fontán cóllense por san Sebaschán, 20 January; they are the basis of the caldo gallego that accompanies the seafaring cooking of the port.
