What to see and do in Abegondo

Abegondo
Village
Abegondo is a rural municipality of about 5,400 inhabitants in the metropolitan area of A Coruña, divided into nineteen parishes between the Mero, Barcés and Gobia rivers; the first widens into the Cecebre reservoir, a temporary refuge for migratory birds, which supplies water to A Coruña. The district, populated since antiquity as its castros show, was for the most part part of the province of Betanzos until 1835, when Abegondo became an independent municipality. It was the land of hidalgo families, of whom eleven pazos and manor houses are still preserved across the municipality. Its district also contains the sports city of Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña. Two variants of the English Way cross it, and it preserves the Figueiroa tower.
Reservoir of Abegondo-Cecebre
Nature
The Abegondo-Cecebre reservoir was formed between 1975 and 1976 by damming the Mero and Barcés rivers to supply water to A Coruña; its gravity dam reaches 23 metres and impounds a surface of 363 hectares with a maximum volume of 21.6 cubic hectometres. The surrounding area, of high ecological value, has been a Site of Community Importance since 2004 and a Special Area of Conservation since 2014, within the Natura 2000 network, and extends across the municipalities of Abegondo, Betanzos, Cambre, Carral and Oza-Cesuras. Its riverside woodlands and shallow waters, no more than six metres deep, are home to more than two hundred bird species and mammals such as the European otter, as well as protected amphibians and reptiles.
Palace of Orto
Monument
Manor house of the 18th century in the parish of Orto, surrounded by centuries-old gardens; it forms part of the dense group of pazos of Abegondo together with those of Quiroga, Macenda, Crendes and Pastoriza.
Bridge of Beldoña
Monument
Bridge of Roman construction in the parish of Mabegondo, originating in the 2nd century and rebuilt in the 14th; it crossed one of the watercourses that feed the present-day Cecebre reservoir, on the road towards the interior.
House of Philip II of Sarandós
Curiosity
House of the 16th century in the parish of Sarandós where in 1554 the future Felipe II spent the night on his way to A Coruña to embark for England, where he was to marry Mary Tudor.
Construction of the Cecebre reservoir
Historical milestone
The dam on the Mero and Barcés rivers was built between 1975 and 1976 to supply water to A Coruña, flooding 275 hectares of floodplain; the resulting wetland is today a special area of conservation and a refuge for migratory birds. The land needed for the work was acquired between 1974 and 1976 by the municipality of A Coruña, the current owner of the area. On the island left by the reservoir, at Orto, there is also a fortified hilltop castro, rediscovered in 2017, oval in plan and with two defensive lines, today overgrown with eucalyptus and accessible only by boat.
