What to see and do in Cabanas

Cabanas
Village
Cabanas is a concello of about 3,300 inhabitants in the comarca of the Eume, in the province of A Coruña, the only one entirely within the ría of Ares; the river Eume, which forms a canyon at Soaserra and opens into a broad ría beside the village, marks its southern boundary with Pontedeume and Monfero. A town founded by the counts of Traba in the 11th century, it lies 37 km from A Coruña and 15 from Ferrol, on a coastal strip of beaches, cliffs and marshes to the south and mountains rising above 470 metres to the east. At Salto a group of petroglyphs has been found next to a cluster of Neolithic burial mounds. Its praia da Madalena backs onto an extensive pine wood, and within its boundaries more than two hundred traditional hórreos can be counted.
Beach and pine grove of the Madalena
Nature
A beach of more than a kilometre at the mouth of the Eume, backed by a nine-hectare wood of pines, oaks and great cork oaks that is crossed on wooden walkways to limit trampling of the vegetation.
Beach of Chamoso
Nature
The Chamoso beach is a rocky cove located south of the parish of San Martiño do Porto, in the municipality of Cabanas, with fine sand and rocky outcrops similar to other beaches on the Ría de Ares, of which it forms part. It has no services except a small car park near the pedestrian access, which overcomes a steep slope; its difficult access and small size keep it away from the bustle of the neighbouring A Madalena beach.
Church of San Martiño do Porto
Monument
A parish church documented since the 15th century on a headland above the ría de Ares; it gives its name to the municipality's coastal parish and marks the point where the shoreline turns from sandy beach to cliff.
Chapel of Riobó
Monument
A hermitage of Renaissance design that keeps a Baroque wooden altarpiece inside; it is one of the smaller churches scattered across the seven parishes of a municipality of a little over three thousand inhabitants.
Petroglyphs of Santa Cruz do Salto
Curiosity
Open-air rock carvings that round off a prehistoric group remarkable for so small a municipality: twenty-nine megalithic mounds have been catalogued in Cabanas, with necropolises such as those of Coto dos Golpes and Coto de Punxeiro.
Pilgrimage of Santa Marta do piñeiral da Madalena
Activity
A pilgrimage festival held beneath the pines that back the beach, revived in 1990 after years of interruption; it is one of the summer occasions that fill the sands directly opposite Pontedeume.
Beach of a Madalena
Nature
A stretch of sand more than a kilometre long backed by a pine wood planted on the dunes, on the shore of the Eume estuary; it is one of the veteran beaches in obtaining the blue flag in Galicia.
Shellfish gathering in the Eume estuary
Food and drink
The banks of sand and mud that the Eume deposits at its mouth sustain the on-foot gathering of clams and cockles, shellfish that in the comarca are prepared steamed, with rice or in empanada.
Torc of the castro of Las Modias
Historical milestone
The gold torc known as the Torque de Porto appeared at the castro das Modias, a fortified settlement located at San Martiño do Porto, in the municipality of Cabanas, set on an almost oval peninsula that naturally defends the river Castro; its central enclosure, about 80 by 100 metres, is surrounded by an earthwork topped with an earthen wall. The Diputación of A Coruña acquired the piece in 1868, and it is today kept in the Archaeological and Historical Museum of Santo Antón Castle, in A Coruña.
Cabanas in the Tumbo (cartulary) of Caaveiro
Historical milestone
The villa appears documented that year in the cartulary of the monastery, within the preserve of Irís; in the 15th century Cabanas replaced A Capela as the prioral and administrative seat of Caaveiro.
The English Way as it passes through Cabanas
Activity
The Jacobean route that starts at Ferrol crosses the concello skirting the estuary before crossing the bridge over the Eume, in a stage that combines marshland, beach pine wood and hamlet paths.
Palace of Caaveiro
Monument
A seigneurial house of the concello that bears the royal coat of arms of Caaveiro with an inscription indicating that it was rebuilt between 1742 and 1748; it recalls the long dominion that the monastery of the Eume exercised over these parishes.
