What to see and do in Ares

Ares
Village
Ares is a seafaring town of about 6,300 inhabitants on the ria bearing its name, on the coastal strip that runs from the entrance of the ria of Ferrol to the port of Redes, with nearly three kilometres of sandy beaches, including those of A Rampa, Redes, Seselle and Chanteiro. Its old town preserves indiano houses with painted wooden galleries. The town has Celtic origins, with the passage of Romans and Suebi, and in the late Middle Ages it welcomed a Jewish community that had arrived from Córdoba and settled in O Porto to trade in salt, going on to have its own synagogue, of which part of a Star of David reused as a lintel is preserved. On the Bezoucos peninsula, on Montefaro mountain, stands the former convent of Santa Catarina, today a military facility.
Monastery of Santa Catarina de Montefaro
Monument
Convent located in the parish of Cervás, high on the Bezoucos peninsula (Ares, A Coruña), with simultaneous views over the rías of Ferrol and Ares. It was founded on 3 August 1393 by Fernán Pérez de Andrade, O Boo, for the Third Order of Saint Francis, who granted it ecclesiastical control over several parishes in the area, among them the Chanteiro hermitage, destination of the Romería del Voto pilgrimage. Of the original building only a doorway survives, with pointed archivolts and zoomorphic-decorated capitals; the Franciscans disappeared with the Mendizábal disentailment in 1837 and the building was used by the military until the year 2000, when it passed to the Ares concello. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2000.
Beach of Chanteiro
Nature
Small shell-shaped beach of fine golden sand, located in the Ares inlet between punta do Segaño and punta Coitelada, in a semi-urban setting; it is about 350 metres long by 40 wide. With moderate swell, it is suitable for sailing and water sports such as diving, and has a boat anchorage area; the surroundings, ringed by pine woods and gorse scrub, alternate low cliffs and meadows along the edge of the Bezoucos peninsula, overlooked by the hermitage of Nosa Señora da Mercede.
Vow of Chanteiro
Activity
A pilgrimage festival held on Whit Tuesday at the hermitage of Nosa Señora da Mercede: it was born of a vow made by the authorities of the comarca in 1404, when plague was ravaging the area, and it still binds Ares, Mugardos and Ferrol together.
The batteries of Segaño and A Coitelada
Curiosity
Coastal batteries raised on the peninsula of Bezoucos to sweep the entrance of the estuaries of Ferrol and Ares. Disused today, their platforms and sentry boxes look out over a coast protected as part of the Costa Ártabra.
Shellfish gathering in the Ares estuary
Food and drink
The sheltered waters of the estuary yield clams, cockles, velvet crabs and queen scallops that support the on-foot shellfish gatherers and the smaller boats. The coastline is included in the protected area of the Costa Ártabra.
