La Font d'en Carròs
Village
La Font d'en Carròs is a municipality of La Safor, in the province of Valencia, which takes its name from the Carròs lineage, admirals of the Crown of Aragon who received the barony of Rebollet after the 1240 conquest — known in Arab times as Rafalí and governed by the Carròs family until the late 15th century. Its castle, conquered that year, was destroyed by an earthquake in 1598, and the 14th-century Mudéjar wall of Rafalí marks its first settlement nucleus. The economy, agricultural for centuries, turned towards construction after the citrus crisis of the 1990s; the El Bolo factory still operates, handcrafting hydraulic tiles of great beauty.
Castle of Rebollet
Monument
The castle of Rebollet, a fortress of Islamic origin located in the present-day municipality of Font d'en Carròs, was granted in 1240 by King James I to Carròs, son of Count Alemany Carròs, who fortified the enclosure, established his residence there and built a church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, in which he placed the Romanesque image of the Virgin of Rebollet. Destroyed by the Castilians in 1344 during the War of the Two Pedros, it was rebuilt in 1368 and later passed, through marriage, to the Centelles family. An earthquake that shook the comarca of la Safor on 26 December 1598 ruined the castle, the church and the village of Rebollet, whose inhabitants moved to Oliva and to La Font d'en Carròs.
Church of San Antonio Mártir
Monument
A 14th-century temple that holds the tombs of several members of the Carròs family, lords of the town. The original church, in Gothic style, was erected in 1329 in the upper part of the village. Among the images it preserves, the Christ of Refuge and Our Lady of Remedy stand out, venerated in the temple alongside the tombs of the former lords of Font d'en Carròs.
Mudejar wall of Rafalí
Monument
The 14th-century walled enclosure of El Rafalí, in La Font d'en Carròs (La Safor), marks the site of the municipality's first settled nucleus, of Mudejar population, and is declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
The Carròs, barons of Rebollet
Historical milestone
The Carròs lineage, admirals of the Crown of Aragon, received after the conquest of 1240 the barony of Rebollet and gave the village its name. From the castle of Rebollet they controlled the lower Serpis valley until the barony was incorporated into the ducal patrimony of Gandia.
